And what better way to kick off the alpha version of 8Asians than with the mandatory post about Korean-American Yul Kwon winning Survivor: Cook Islands? Yul was known as Puppet master or Godfather due to his strategical playing, but was also hyper-aware that he was playing as an underrepresented minority on reality television. This might have been gotten him some backlash, but I for one enjoyed the fact that there were five (FIVE!) Asians on a television show and not have the plot revolve the Vietnam war or Chinatown gangs.

i find it interesting how some white people show so much animosity when people of color start coming up: “they’re taking all our jobs,” “affirmative action is unfair,” and Yul saying he’s glad a minority will win Survivor being deemed racist. White people never have to be glad a white person wins, bc they _almost always do_.
I’m happy for Yul. I have to admit I did cheer extra loud for the Puka team, and thought it was great to see 4 POC’s in the final.
And yes, the absence of war/gang references was also a plus.
