Tired of being Asian?

By Ernie | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 | 12 Comments

From Min Jung by way of gigglesugar, this OMGWTF billboard:

truth ministry Tired of being Asian?

Shocked? Of course you are. And, after some investigation by gigglesugar reader vegan musician, that’s exactly the kind of response they’re looking for, albeit in a slightly roundabout way:

I looked on their website. they’re an anti-homosexuality “ministry.” someone doctored their sign [in Photoshop] to try to make the point that trying to change someone’s ethnicity is as ridiculous as trying to change their sexuality.
here’s the link.

While I’m happy that it isn’t for real, a part of me wonders if people casually glancing by the billboard would make the link that undoing your gayness is just as outrageous as undoing your ethnicity. Also, “asian” should be capitalized, but hey, those are just details.

"The fact is" I am soooo laughing out loud while reading. Also high fiving. I knew the soon-to-be attorney would chime in and regulate.

Casual Observer:

You argue that sexual orientation cannot be justified as a civil rights issue. I disagree.

"Civil rights are the protections and privileges of personal power given to all citizens by law. . . . Civil rights can in one sense refer to the equal treatment of all citizens irrespective of race, sex, or other class[.]" (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_rights).

The laws of most jurisdictions in this country do not protect nor empower gays and lesbians with the privilege to marry, extend health care benefits to their partners, or even adopt children. However, heterosexual couples in the same situations can. Up until very recently, we even deemed certain lifestyle choices completely unlawful. Recall Lawrence v. Texas (2003). If blatant and unapologetic discrimination against people based on sexual orientation alone is not a civil rights issue, then THAT, my friend, would, in your words, "really bring into question the legitimacy of civil rights as a whole."

By the way, is sexual orientation really a "lifestyle choice"? You know this conclusively now, while all the other social scientists and scholars struggle with that debate? Good for you. Good for you. Frankly, I still think it is an immutable characteristic, exactly like race.

...

And Claire is laughing so hard as she reads my comment. Dear Casual Observer, you know you're really in trouble when an uber conservative Republican defends the other side.

Casual observer, it not indeed "fact" that "once you turn a lifestyle into a civil rights issue..." That is your *opinion* or should I say, plural, opinions, because you imply several in that statement. Everyone is entitled to some around here, but please do not present your opinions as fact.

My opinion is that minorities, all of us, need to respect one another's struggles and not engage in pissing contests. If we CHOOSE this path of solidarity, it would make for a great, uhhh, lifestyle.

"ummm"...

Sexual orientation is not the same thing as race. As a minority, I'm a little surprised that you equate the two.

But then, being Asian isn't really the same as being, say African-American or Latino, is it? I mean, are you really a minority when people automatically think you're good at math and/or piano and/or violin and/or engineering? It's not like people step off of the sidewalk when you're walking toward them or automatically assume you're going to rob their store when you walk in. But even watered-down racism by comparison doesn't justify sexual orientation as a civil rights issue. The fact is, once you turn a *lifestyle* into a civil rights issue, you really bring into question the legitimacy of civil rights as a whole.
