You know, I think there actually -were- beads on my slippers. Shoot.

My Mom once gave me a pair of Chinese slippers to give as a birthday gift to a grade-school classmate. In a class of only one Asian (me), I remember feeling all embarrassed about having Chinese slippers as a gift. I thought it was a lame gift.

(That girl later wrote in my high school yearbook that she had a crush on me in grade school, so I guess she didn't find the gift lame at all :-)

I have nostalgic memories of visiting my grandparents near Oakland Chinatown, and slipping my toes into a pair of red and gold slippers too! As a little girl, I was amazed with the intricate beading and unique designs. (I'm sure you were in awe with the "non-girly" beading on your slippers too, right?)

The slippers at my grandparents house were neatly stacked by the front door in varying colors and sizes. Every guest of the home, typically removed their shoes and slid their feet into a pair of these "community" slippers. This is kind of disturbing now thinking about the number of sweaty toes that shared my favorite red velvet ones with the gold and emerald orchid design. EW.
