USA should not have to legally mandate english as the official language because english really is the de facto official language. However, it would not be in america's best interest to make america a monolingual society. All immigrants that move here eventually lose their native tongue, but being a polyglot has so much potential. It's good for the brain, it makes life easier if you were to go into business or politics, and I've always believed knowing more is better than less. My grandmother always said there was no such thing as wasted learning. Many countries in the world have more than one official language and europeans often fluently speak 3-4 or more languages. We should foster foreign language competence in Americans and accomodate immigrants who have not mastered english, however english should be the common language in practice.

America should have two official languages with equal status in government, legal and educational fields, Spanish and English.

If there are more and more Chinese immigrants coming to America, Chinese should also become another official language with equal status to Spanish and English in America.

At present, Canada only has two official languages, French and English, but due to the large number of Chinese immigrants, I believe that the Chinese Canadian community should begin to lobby in favor of making Chinese another official language in Canada with equal status to French and English.

Bo, I think I sort of get what you're saying - but I still don't think that making it all official would change anything drastically. There would still be an influx of immigrants, people will still be learning foreign languages in school. In Canada, eventhough the official languages are English and French - the government still publishes information in other languages.

BTW - there is NOTHING simple about Simplified Chinese.
