I grow my pinky nail outs not because of fashion (I actually had no clue this was a thing until some people pointed it out to me), status (it doesn't mean the same thing in the US as in Asia), or picking my nose or ears. I actually grow them out because I have small hands and having long fingernails make them appear longer. However, I play the violin so once my nails reach a certain point, my violin teacher makes me cut them off. I started to grow out my pinky nail on whim (my mom use to do it) and my teacher has yet to care. At this point, I feel like it's purely out of habit rather than any conscious decision on my part. He is EXTREMELY Chinese, especially about cultural things. While I've never asked, knowing his personality and the general culture, I would imagine that (for him, anyway) the long nails are about status. A lot of them do have the longer pinkie nail, but it is not only the men. I have seen this on a number of women too. From my perspective, I just questioned their hygiene.
