I've heard that Crab Rangoon was actually developed by the Trader Vic's Restaurant (the one that just closed on Golden Gate/Van Ness) back in the 50s. I've always thought they were really gross myself--cream cheese and crab? Eww!

I've also heard varying things on the fortune cookie, that it was originally taken from a European (German? Austrian?) cookie recipe where the cookies are made super thin, and folded against a mold while still hot to shape it, and that the Chinese Americans in Chinatown just devised the fortune cookie from that. It could be a combination of these things. Who knows?
