SF Mayor hints at 2008 Beijing Olympic torch route

San Francisco

In today’s front page story in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper reports on a little bit more detail about the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay happening in San Francisco on April 9th - the only city to be represented in North America:

The mayor said that the route for the torch relay has been broadly determined, but he did not provide information about specific streets, saying only that the route and its ceremonies will include the areas around the Ferry Building and AT&T Park and likely will exclude Chinatown. He also declined to specify the time of the festivities other than to say they will not take place during commute hours…“But no one will be denied the ability to protest all along the parade route if, indeed, they find that it is a great idea because they want to disrupt what should be a unifying event and try to make it more divisive,” Newsom said.”

The logistics of having the torch route go through Chinatown are quite challenging given the narrow streets in the neighborhood. And it looks like that anybody will be able to protest along the torch route, something that appeared not to be possible when previously reported in the news and on this blog.
