I like Christy's idea of embracing the "Twinkie". As Asian Americans, we can't deny our Asian roots nor our American lifestyle. They are both an important part of us and makes us who we are.

Heh.. I considered myself a twinkie until I went on Loveboat... that's what really opened my eyes to the Taiwanese culture and traditions that I never knew about...

It's had such an influence on me... I've gone back to Taiwan every year since, trying hard to learn the language, and even going back to school so I can get a job that would put me in China or Taiwan

As it stands, I'm no longer a twinkie, but I'm also not "fob" status... I think the correct term for me is Fobabee

http://www.nemesiscorporate.com/AsianRU/

Yes, I forgot about the term banana. I have heard of twinkie more often though. Twinkie's are artificial, unlike a banana, which is a fruit. So I think twinkie also conveys the idea of something not being truly 'real' or true to oneself.

I'm a twinkie too. This used to bother me because I thought I would appear much more cultured, "exotic" , special and interesting if I was "fully Asian" (language, traditions, etc). I guess I felt diappointed that I couldn't reach the expectations of my Asian relatives, of my non-Asian peers interested in Asian culture (I wanted to be their prime source of Asian knowlege) and even Caucasian guys who are into the "exotic" Asian gals. I agree when one is a twinkie, one has decided not to chose between two or more cultures..instead they blend them. There's a bit of a balance..twinkies aren't too Asian nor are they too American (but then again [as you said] what the heck does it mean to be 100% Asian or American?). But speaking superficially, I don't believe twinkies can ever imitate White America...it's almost as if there's something inborn or genetic that still makes us have a different mindset. Isn't Banana an alternative term for twinkie? That's the one I heard mostly when growing up. Thanks. Great post.
