8 Asians

Today is 9/9. Even though the luckiest number is eight, the number nine is pretty lucky, too. In Chinese, the double nine is pronounced the same as the word to signify “forever,” both are “Jiu Jiu.”

The number nine is fairly lucky, because it sounds like the word for ‘a long time’, and is hence associated with longevity. Every year the 9th of September (9/9) is the day for the ‘Old People’s Festival’, just like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, but specifically for old people.

In short, today was an important day.

It’s also an important day because the special two-disc FORBIDDEN KINGDOM DVD came out today! It includes:

  • The Kung Fu Dream Team: the historical airing of Jackie Chan and Jet Li
  • The Dangerous Beauty: The introduction of Bing Bing Li and Crystal Liu, the two main ladies of FORBIDDEN KINGDOM
  • Filming in ‘Chinawood’: Hollywood-like set in the China-based studio. This special set about 40 miles away from Beijing has physical sets in several different time periods. The production team was able to utilize this to capture the ancient Forbidden Kingdom look!

Did you see this in the theaters? I can’t wait to play it at home on projector and watch it on my 100″ screen (OK, it’s a wall with some holes in it. But it’s still pretty cool.)

What next?

  • Too bad the movie was only so-so. I saw it with Howie when I was up in Seattle back in April and wasn’t too impressed by it.

  • I saw it in the theater, and it wasn’t very good. It would be better to spend your time re-watching Drunken Master 2 or Once Upon a Time in China.

  • Forbidden Kingdom was a crap movie. It has a nerdy white guy as the lead who gets with the Chinese girl. Totall Hollywood propoganda. Even Jackie Chan warned his fans that this movie would suck:

You know it’s bad when the star badmouths the movie. You’re a fool for getting so worked up over it. Go watch Once Upon a Time in China, or even Big Trouble in Little China if you want something more authentic.

  • haha… haters…

while the storyline wasn’t the best, I thought the five-minute fight between the two made the movie worth watching!

If you REALLY wanna see a crap Jackie Chan or Jet Li movie, watch “The Medallion” or “The One” respectively… and yes, I paid to see both opening night -_-

It’s not really fair to compare it against “Wong Fei Hung”… though they’re both martial arts flicks, they’re different genres, with “Wong Fei Hung” being a historical drama and “Forbidden Kingdom” being a comedic fantasy adventure… a better comparison would be “A Chinese Ghost Story” or the like

Off-topic, but does anyone know why the girl consistantly spoke in the third-person?

  • i agree with Jeff C…
that fight scene made the whole movie worth it…
it was like the second Star Wars movie… it was 2 hrs of shitty-ness and Hayden Chris-whats-his face’s horrible acting but when Yoda pulled out his lightsaber and started jumping off walls fighting Count Dooku it was SOOOOO worth it…
