You can see how he grew from a comedic gangster to the come-to-zen kung fu master of his past few films. CJ7 seemed to be a step which took him out of the movie's main focus but you could see what he was trying to do. Youre onto something about the CG. The God of Cookery (my favorite Chow movie to date) had a plastic car dragged across a RISK game board for effects and was a wonderful movie. All that said, given how he painted himself rather Bruce Lee like in Kung Fu and had a Bruce Lee-esque goal keeper in Shaolin Soccer...him as Kato. Has me smiling.
