BoA’s Asian Video for “Eat You Up” Different From American Version

By Ernie | Monday, October 20, 2008 | 15 Comments

So a quick follow-up from the previous post on “Eat You Up,” BoA’s first attempt to break-out in the U.S. pop music market — it looks like there will be two versions of the music video — one for Asian audiences, one for American audiences. It may be that my sarcasm levels have been really high for the past couple of weeks, but here are the biggest difference I’ve noticed from this video (linked from Slant Eye for the Round Eye) and her U.S. teaser video due next month:

  • In the Asian version of her music video, BoA is more “dancey” and not as “sexy.”
  • Also in the Asian version of her music video, there are no black people.

Also: Did the first 25 seconds of the video remind anyone else of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time?” Except with a ribcage hoodie instead of a schoolgirl outfit? No? Okay, just me then.

UPDATE: Okay, updated with BoA’s American version of the same video, this time on the right, for side-by-side comparisons. One more note: girl, what’s up with the gold baseball cap? You can NOT break into the American market with that hat on. No, no, no. That is an epic fashion FAIL right there.

FYI - They canned the video director of the American version and are just using it as a promo clip/ piece. They're using the Asian version instead.

I will say this again. Cheon Sang Ji Hee The Grace FIGHTING!

I updated the post with both videos, side by side. Oi, BoA's American video isn't much better.

Not a good song. If this is her best effort, thats sad. Video is just aite, but doesn't make up for the heavy accent.

I do agree that the originality is a little lacking. It's very Flashdance/Billy Elliot/Save the Last Dance. But I do like this version a lot better than the last one. At least the skeleton hoodie made a cannibalistic reference to the words "Eat You Up". Although, I too sincerely wish they would rewrite the lyrics.

The song might grow on me overtime but the dance move is very slick.

I don't really get the lyrics but that's besides the point. There's no originality to this video whatsoever. The dance choreography is bleh. The music and beats are bleh. The video idea is bleh bleh bleh. She has do a lot better than this to make it big.
