8 Asians

I always try to watch The Daily Show and occasionally watch The Colbert Report from beginning-to-end. The other day, I was surprised, given the election season, that Stephen Colbert was interviewing the world famous cello master Yo-Yo Ma. Even if you are not into classical music, I’m sure you’ve heard of him – which is pretty amazing. I’m not sure I know of any famous violinists offhand. I guess “Yo-Yo” is a pretty easy name to remember! This was one strange interview – well, almost any interview with Stephen Colbert is going to be fairly non-standard! Below is his performance on the show.

  • You don’t know any famous violinists off-hand?

Even people who aren’t into classical music have probably heard of (one of these):

    Sarah Chang
    Itzhak Perlman
    Midori
    Anne-Sophie Mutter
    Joshua Bell
    Vanessa Mae
    Lin Cho-Liang (Taiwanese)

Bonus points for those who know who Linda Brava is… and what she’s famous for other than being a violinist…

I thought of all those off the top of my head… these aren’t even necessarily the violinists real violin aficionados would consider the best living violinists of the day… just ones that the average person may have heard of!

  • I went to the taping of that episode! It was pretty great — after they stopped recording Colbert sang a song with the group.

Yo Yo Ma seemed so serene and chill. I <3 him.

  • jozjozjoz – I think Itzhak Perlman is pretty well known, but I don’t know about the other violinists.

Brianna – cool. I have a hard time imagining the audience singing along with Colbert. I want to attend a taping.

  • john, if you were a straight female, you’d definitely know josh bell–he’s very *easy* on the eyes. :)

My favorite part of the clip: “Form-fitting”…

  • I’d like to know the name of the group playing with YoYo Ma

  • [...] I blogged a few months ago about Yo-Yo Ma and his appearance on The Colbert Report. Tonight, I watched on NBC Nightly News a nice profile of Yo-Yo Ma and Ma’s ten year involvement in The Silk Road Project. The segment shows an old black & white video clip of Ma at age seven, when he performed for President John Kennedy – a very precocious child prodigy just a bit taller than his cello. [...]
