Not getting the Magibon love

| |

What’s the deal is with this Magibon girl? Apparently she’s some Internet phenomenon and the Japanese adore her, and outside of her cute appearance, the Youtube videos are thirty to forty seconds of… uhm… well, let’s just say that I wish I had those seconds back.

Doing some research, it seems that there are a lot of fans, but even more people that just don’t get it like myself. She does have that anime look, and I can understand the attraction to Japanese culture being how much it’s slowly infiltrated into western culture, via print and television. But wow, this is a fascination that is almost unhealthy. She’s even gone all out and even picked up the way Japanese girls talk, with the whole cutesy thing going on.

While she’s gone and had her fifteen minutes of fame, I’m still not biting on the explanations of why she creates silent Youtube videos. She claims that it’s because she first started by wanting to see the video of herself doing the wave, but let’s be honest here — anyone that has ever used a webcam knows that you can view it locally without having to upload it to Youtube. Somehow, I feel that she uploaded them but didn’t think she’d get the following that she did.

Strangely enough, I don’t know why she knows why she uploaded those videos either. If anyone understands why she does this and why she has the fame that she does, please clue me in since I’m dying to know what the heck I’m actually missing out on. (Okay, maybe I’m not that interested; I might waste another thirty seconds groaning.)

What next?

  • I would have to say that i don't know why she started or continues, but i know for a fact that japanese guys do like just watching the faces, so they can get comfortable with females and so on. it seems that there are a lot of japanese guys who are just too shy, and could use this. i would guess that's why she's really popular in japan.

I don't know if she's imitating the youtube thing that Jessica Alba did...the staring contest. Just my guess. Kids these days are just way too into themselves. heheh.

...I think I read somewhere that she's supposed to be part of a viral marketing campaign for a Japanese horror movie. A lonelygirl15 of sorts, if you will.

Not gonna lie, her videos are super creepy. It's her eyes O_O

From her mimicry and her interviews, it seems she was just your typical (mostly white) person obsessed with the Japanese culture.

What does Youtube provide but a way to create a character and personality one could be without repercussions? The attention she received was probably very flattering and she annoyed the paradoxical anonymity and adoration - she seems considerably more a fish out of water in the actual Japan, being called out on the fact that her appearance hasn't been completely honest or that her japanese isn't nearly so complete as her youtubes imply. To be honest, if you took your typical japanophile and put them in actual Japan, you'd probably get her.

But putting that aside, I disagree with the hate she's seems to be receiving ever since the 'real' her came out in the interview. It's a bit understandable, but I think it's less indignation over being 'duped' and more just people crowing over someone pretty and adored being brought 'low'. She's still quite cute even with the longer face, she's just a normal cute girl. I don't think she ever explicitly pretended to be hot stuff, her youtube pics were just her 15 minutes of daydreaming, yea?
