Oh the delicious irony. I love how rife this article is with Asian stereotypes. “Its not often we think of ourselves as cool”? Dunno bout you, but I think of myself as fucking Miles Davis with glasses.

Mitsuru, I appreciate you not tolerating any hate speech. That said, Tien isn't just throwing the n-word around, he's addressing the fact that is how Chris Rock is responding to other people in their communities, similar to the very post you wrote about Asian comedians. Like the comedy you watched and had an opinion about, there's an element of context that's a gray area, and I think that's the underlying issue here.

For what it's worth, I think the context is completely appropriate.

We don’t have to take what was given to us.

This is the part for which I needed clarification. We should be careful to differentiate the things that are “given to us” and things that were simply misappropriated or misunderstood by society and then cast back upon us. The “bad driver” stereotype, for example, is one where I’m left scratching my head.

To refer back to the ever-popular topic of ninja, I don’t see anything wrong with genuine interest in the subject. True, it can be and has been perverted into a stereotype, but that ought not discourage APAs from liking the sub-culture (that’s what I feel it is here in NA) or repping it or whatever.

I get it. We’re all ambassadors. I guess the question I had in regards to your comments is that you seemed to be rebuking folks around here, when the real problem lies in *gasp* the power structure. If we spend more time educating others and less time worrying about how ninja are perceived or what have you, then I feel like it’d be time better spent. That’s not to say that these aims are mutually exclusive, and I understand the point of this post is to specifically address the APA community and how we interact with stereotypes. However, where’s the criticism of the racist society that permits this kind of thing to happen?

Of course, I’m sure these are your intentions. But this is just my response to what you’ve outlined here.
