Hehe...I saw a video on youtube that reminded me of this old post. If you think singing in French or the previous video of the Chinese guy singing in Hindi was weird, there's this Asian boy band singing in Russian (or Kazakh, not sure). It might look "weirder" to some people in North America.

I think people who find it weird to find a Vietnamese person speaking French probably just watched Rush Hour 3, where Chris Tucker says “You're Asian, stop embarrassing yourself!”

There's a lot of ignorance in the world, but blogging and exposing people of different artists like this still helps. I mean it doesn't even have to be about colonization, there's tons of people of Asian descent who are living outside of the U.S. or Asia so it's only natural that some of them become fluent in other languages.

I don't think the OP was saying it was “weird” to see/hear an Asian person singing in French; in fact I believe they were making the opposite point.

And I agree. It is rather “usual” quite frankly, especially since Asians are EVERYWHERE and deeply part of the local culture that of course not only would they speak another language but also represent their local culture. Some great examples are Caribbean Chinese, African Chinese and SE Asian Chinese to cite few. Any rudimentary study in Diasporic Asians would reveal this.

Yeah, I agree with Cao Quoc quite a lot. If many people would open their eyes, there's quite a lot of East Asians who can speak quite fluently with French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, or any other non East-Asian language. The reasons why are very numerous. Actually, I don't know why this is weird, surely the Asian neighbors in Quebec can speak French and probably sing too. I understand though if it's like wow an Asian face in pop culture...in a different language too.

Being a “fucking weird Asian guy speaking French”, hearing her singing in French sounds totally casual to me, she's just a “French-equivalent” of Asian Americans. I've also met Asian people speaking German, Swedish or Greek, doesn't sound weirder than Asians speaking English to me. The only sad thing is that sometimes those people tend to forget their Asian roots…
Somemore the song is quite nice, nice and sweet voice, a VN-born French singer in French entertainment industry is not that common, makes me kinda proud
