Hmmm...interesting theory. I actually was going to do something similar for my PhD dissertation which was exploring a new coming out model when interviewing young queer Filipino American men and their coming out experiences. To put in lay terms, coming out is something that is never done and complete, which can probably be argued for most of us, regardless of ethnicity. People are out dependent on the situation at hand and the perceived threat to themselves, and that coming out is a lot more nuanced than what may be perceived.

I totally empathize with Tim. I'm pretty much completely out, but at the same time, my family doesn't like talking about it, even though they're mostly okay with it (well, forcing the issue by being on a major Filipino news show talking about same-sex marriage will do that). I don't see any point in beating people over the head with my sexual identity; it's just simply part (but not completely) who I am.

It's hard enough being Asian in America but adding LGBT can be really exhausting from a career and family perspective! My mom thought that when I turned 30, I would get out of the gay phase and become straight. The rest of my family doesn't know and my parents would freak out if the other members of my family found out. Now that I am 34, my family is screaming for marriage and children. There are times I just don't want to be near the family and run away. I am just grateful that I know who I am (gay Asian male).
