that's awesome! wish my highschool had had one, so i wouldn't have had to take spanish , hopefully more schools take on more asian languages as part of their curriculum

I work for a government office in the Philippines. I am presently doing a concept paper on teaching the Filipino language in schools in the USA in districts or areas with high concentration of Filipinos. My office has been considering this project for many years now but we lack the information on how to go about it. We also need partners and lobby groups in the USA. Your article made me hopeful.

Sometimes I think this is just so hypocritical. It really saddens me when I come across fellow Filipinos who doesn't know one bit of their parents' native language. Just shows how dysfunctional our culture is. As an example, one lady commented in my blog that to her it is USELESS to learn it. Whaaaattt???

It's the belief that they'll pick up the accent…or more likely that the kids will find out that the parents talk shit about them to their faces.

Why don't Filipino parents want their kids taking this? That's so weird to me. I so badly wish we were taught to speak a second language in our home… I don't get it.
