Thanks for your comment. I'd like to address the quotation you lifted from my post, as I probably should've better explained my thoughts. I do believe that when you do immigrate to another country you should adapt to the language there - that's a given. Unfortunately, there are some people who don't have the aptitude to learn new languages or adapt to different environments quickly. Even as I watch overseas Korean pop stars in variety shows, their comprehension still lacks because they are unfamiliar with the new slang, terms etc. My point is that the learning curve is quite steep and difficult and natives treat them poorly even when they are trying.

Btw - I'm in Canada and I've never come across someone who has denied me service because I spoke English ... even when I was in Quebec. Things are definitely different in the States then.

"I remember getting into an argument with my sister who only speaks English with a little French and Italian, believes people should learn English when they come to North America. I retorted, “Let’s see you go to China and how quickly you can pick up the language there.”

If people immigrate to America, they should learn English. That is the country's language. If your sister immigrated to China, she should learn Chinese. The fact that she only speaks English really has no bearing on your argument since she lives in AMERICA. If she lived in China and complained that people should learn English there, that would be an issue. The fact that people come to America and then take up service positions and don't think they have to speak English (I lived in Southern California long enough to come across enough places where employees wouldn't even HELP you if you didn't speak Spanish) is what's wrong with the world.

This is coming from a native French speaker who learned English fluently when she moved to America and then learned Japanese fluently when she moved to Japan. You speak the language of the country you live in, period. Otherwise, don't try and take their jobs, stay home.

Okay I'll say it. Why is it okay to use "gay" as a derogatory term. Why is no one bothered by that?

That being said, he was a kid expressing frustration in a kid's dialogue. No one should place too much credibility on what flies from the mouth of a teenager. The uproar is misplaced. It's not like a grown man stepping on stage and snatching the mic away from someone during their acceptance speech.

It's crazy to think how words, taken out of context, can lead to such harsh consequences. Here is a young kid who had to leave his family behind and relocate to a foreign land where he has no grasp of the native language and culture. Imagine how frustrating that would be! I feel bad for Jaebeom and what he is going through. It just shows the harsh reality of being a celebrity. There are always people standing behind them with knives sharpened.
