I think it's pretty fucked up someone said to you “you showed your true colors and it wasn't Asian”. What's that supposed to mean? Seriously, these people need to get out more. Plenty of people “of our ethnicity” who DO have hops and height in this sport and in general. Plus, it takes more than height. Back when I used to play, I routinely “roofed” people and I'm one of the “short” ones at 5'9″. I am one of the shortest Asian guys in Los Angeles, I swear. In fact, I feel short in China and Taiwan too. Dudes there are tall. People need to get off the stereotypes, it's getting old, real old.

It’s about that time of year where most volleyball players start shifting from outdoors to indoors.
Maybe for you, but here in Silicon Valley, I am finally recovering from some injuries and looking forward to get out and playing out on the sand! We can pretty much play outdoors on the sand all year round, with the exception of rainy chilly days during the winter (although I have played in the rain).
The more I think about it, the less there are of Asians that actually bust out in either sand or indoor volleyball.
I have to say that it probably depends on where you live. If you go to some open gyms for volleyball here in the Bay Area, like the one in the Milpitas sports center, the majority of people playing there are Asian. I have coached youth volleyball (grades 5-8) at my kids school for the past 6 years, and all of my teams have been mostly Asian. A few of the Asian kids I coached are still playing in high school. When I play on the sand at work (sand volleyball courts are a perk at some companies here in Silicon Valley), a lot of players are Asian, and many are pretty tall. I was surprised to play against tall Indian guys. Back in the day (way back in the day) when I was an undergraduate, I played in Asian leagues made of teams from different East Coast colleges. I also knew Asians who played on regular NCAA intercollegiate volleyball teams.
As for the height thing, Asians vary a lot. I have played with a lot of tall Asians who could easily roof people, but I am not tall and don't roof people very often. The Asian kids I have coached aren't tall either - my daughter's team was like a team of all liberos. They were good though - they were quick and often beat teams that were taller.

My sister plays volleyball and recently we were recently discussing Kevin. I'm waiting for the first Asian American basketball player to make the NBA.
