I live in Taipei and it's a huge bestseller here. Both anecdotes you mention above, including yours, sound like my family's story. In our case, my grandparents were never reunited with the son they left behind in China (he was ill and they were afraid of moving him) because he died in an "accident" during the Cultural Revolution.
