Asian American Commercial Watch: All American Mom, Daughter & Boyfriend in Target Ad

While watching The Amazing Race on my DVR, I had to quickly rewind to see what I thought I had seen. Target has done it again, this time with a new television commercial featuring an all Asian American cast featuring an over-protective mom named Wendy as she keeps an eye on her teenage daughter and her new boyfriend. I really hope this ad is airing in other markets besides the Bay Area and California, as I find them so refreshing, especially after those recent commercials from MetroPCS and Radio Shack.

They're being shown in the Northeast.

Lol @ "I really hope this ad is airing in other markets besides the Bay Area and California".

    NY > CA.

I think the term "All-American" is problematic.

    In what way, jameswoods9?
  • jameswoods9
It suggest that there's a way to appear, sound or act American.

Hey! This aired in NY too! Well to be specific, Long Island. Funny/awesome commercial.

Cool just saw this a few minutes ago, the lady reminds me of the Piama character from the "Malcom in the Middle" TV show, not sure if it's her though...

I've always loved this Tim Horton's commercial featuring a Chinese family.
It's a few years old, probably aired only in Canada:

What a great commercial--it rings true.

Goddamn it, now I'm a blubbering mess after watching the Tim Horton's commercial.

Yeah, it brought tears to my eyes too. Damn, they're getting really good at pulling the ol' heartstrings. Great to see some of the Asian-Canadian immigrant experience in commercials.

I went to the electronic section in Target Greatland in the East Bay while searching for that new game, Heavy Rain for PS3 and when I passed through the glass case I found it! Though it wasn't on sale, sadly. Instead I just looked at it through the glass case. After about 30 seconds, I moved over to the clearance section to rummage through some discounted stuff. When I turned around, they were playing this exact same commercial on their HD TV displays! Then I was like, OMG I wonder if 8Asians knows about this because they always have great posts on AA/PI's in everyday consumable media. Sure enough a few a days later its here!

I ended up buying an electric toothbrush, but that has nothing to do with this post.

It is! I'm in Boston, and while I usually use my DVR to skip over the ads, I went back and found this one, about 13 minutes into last Sunday's Amazing Race. The "daughter" actress looked like she might even be Filipina, which is exciting to me as a mixed-race Filipina-American.
