Are Asian American men really small, or just insecure?

By Efren | Thursday, March 25, 2010 | 8 Comments

As most of you have noticed by now, I’m always interested in posting stuff about Asian American (straight) men’s issues and the rather annoying paradox of representation in American media: Asian American men bitch about not being represented in the media, but when they’re called out to actively participate, they’d rather not put themselves out there, thus exacerbating the problem.

Jeff Yang in his regular sfgate.com column today does a great job talking about this in terms of straight porn and the absolute lack of Asian American straight male porn stars, and the collective insecurity that many straight Asian men have about their bodies and their dicks.  Yang interviews Keni Styles (warning: this link is NSFW–and I’ve talked about him before)  and his rise to being one of the most sought after straight porn stars in the business–and his opinion on why straight Asian American men appear to be, well, all talk and no action.

I don’t really understand this thing about straight Asian guys wanting to see other Asian guys doing porn. For a straight man, it’s about watching the women doing nasty things, the guy is irrelevant.

Secondly, I don’t really agree that Asian-American men aren’t willing to put themselves out there – whatever that means. I just don’t think that’s true.

Well, it seems to me that the one doing most of the bitching lately is you as you seem to be more interested in taking shots at straight asian men (as usual) rather than the so-called issues themselves.

If straight asian men wreak of insecurity, then you (and Ernie) have always wreaked of a faux sense of exceptionalism. As in “look at me, I’m gay and different, the issues of straight asian men don’t apply to me.” “I’m on the sane, progressive side without the issues, the winning side.”

As to the issue of asian men entering WESTERN porn, MinorityMilitant is way ahead of you and has already covered it twice. His second interview is with Hung Lo and both of them made excellent points. It’s a concise and great read. You can read all about it here:

    http://minoritymilitant.blogspot.com/2010/01/hung-lo-bares-all.html

However, MM is not only ahead of you in the timeline, but also in perspective. Instead looking at this as “are asian men just insecure about their little wee wee parts (how old are you)?”, MM and his interviewee sees this as another barrier that asian men are just starting and continuing to break through, hence we are starting to notice performers like Styles and Lo. It starts off with pioneers buddy, not the whole damn pinkberry clan going in for auditions.

I know it may be difficult for you to grasp because you’re so special and different, but maybe, JUST MAYBE (just a little…), the same racist factors that hinder asian men from the mainstream media could also apply to … (gasp) … the porn world. Could it be?

Again, I know you’re special and our issues don’t apply to you, but take it into consideration.

Thanks for the link, Efren. I wouldn’t have seen it without your post.

You know, I read the whole interview on Jeff’s site, and I got a TOTALLY different interpretation of Keni Styles’s views on Asian American men and action. I really didn’t get the impression he was criticizing Asian American men–he specifically says that he doesn’t know first-hand what we’ve been through, but that he himself has made it through alot. He also doesn’t say anything about the group in general–he simply talks about his discussions with a select few of us.

I think it’s important to make this distinction: he’s not tarring us with the same labels that many like to put on us. We Asian men sometimes get stuck with the “apathetic” or “no action” label, and Keni isn’t sticking us with that. He’s just saying that he himself has overcome a lot.

i agree. and whilst there arent lots of AAdudes trying to get out there, theres that website shelovesasian____ . and i think hes doing something positive for AAmen . shame hes a bit skinny tho, but yknow AApornstudpride’s gotta start somewhere.

That insecurity comes from a society which has destroyed the group’s confidence and confidence comes from excelling at something.

It usually starts with role models to lead the way of which we have none in the heterosexual area. Certain factors, such as this post, don’t help inspire because it smacks of mockery.

Want someone to build confidence? Inspire, lead, and encourage. Not find out what they are doing wrong and harp on it.

    @urb4n
I agree, I don’t appreciate this article either. There are already negative perceptions about asian males in the western cultures and this article is saying asian males are reluctant or haven’t gone out there aggressively when they have been ridiculed as being sexless that they should change overnight? Really? That’s going to take some time.

It’s just genetics… smaller female pelvic size along with an appropriate male counterpart.

Besides, the desire for any person to want a gigantic piece is just an underlying desire to impregnate as many women as possible. While that seems like fun, it’s not exactly something worth aspiring to…
