While I classify myself as a lover of all things techno and classic rock, I’m a huge fan of hip hop but only when it comes to the artists who treat their work seriously. In the realm of Asian American hip hop, there’s a large number of artists out there that I show tremendous respect for, from the likes of Snacky Chan, Blue Scholars, Kero One, Denizen Kane, Magnetic North, Notorious MSG, and so many more.
There’s a new hip hop artist on the rise and his name is Mondega. Continue Reading »

The trailer for the sequel to Kung Fu Panda is starting to make its rounds and it tells us absolutely nothing about the plot.
Nonetheless, I am sure that the Jennifer Yuh-directed animated feature will be just as good, if not better than The Karate Kid (probably better). I know, I know — we gave the Jaden Smith vehicle a hard time (if he whipped his hair back and forth in the movie, I would’ve TOTALLY loved it) — mostly because of the use of the word karate vs. kung fu AND some of us who absolutely adore the original felt violated.
Maybe I am just biased because they used the term “kung fu” in an accurate context and I have an affinity for computer animated animals doing martial arts — but there’s only so much Jack Black that I can take.
So says a recent infographic, which states that Asian woman are less likely to commit infidelity in comparison to women of a different ethnicity — 5.1% versus 18.3% of Black Women or 15.5% of, uhm, “American” women. As far as you men are concerned, Asian men have a higher infidelity rate at 18.3%, but compare that to the 1 out of 3 Spanish men creepin’ around. Check the full infographic after the jump, and debate whether you think the results are accurate or if you think a whole shitload of Asians are lying on their anonymous Google surveys. When I first blogged about Jean Quan running for Oakland mayor, I didn’t really think she had much of a chance given the fact that her main opponent would be former California State Senate leader Don Perata, who was better funded, well known and had the Democratic machine behind him.
On election night, Quan had just 24 percent to Perata’s 35 percent. In most elections, there would be a run-off election. However, this was Oakland’s first election that had ranked-choice voting, where voters not only voted for their first choice pick, but also their second and third place choice – which would eliminate the need (and expense) and shorten the time to determine the winner if no one candidate received over 50 percent of the vote.
During the campaign season, Quan actively campaigned that everyone NOT vote for Perata for second or third choice – “Anyone but Don” was her rallying cry. On Wednesday, the results from ranked-choice voting was finalized, and Quan proved to be a more popular second and third choice among supporters of the other eight candidates. In the end, she had 51 percent of the vote to Perata’s 49 percent. And no one is more shocked, disappointed and disgruntled than Perata. Continue Reading »
As a Filipino American, I am contractually obligated to worship Manny Pacquiao (and Tim Lincecum — hair and all). So when I saw Niketown’s window display in San Francisco’s Union Square, I felt that it was my civic duty to take a picture.
Just in time for the big Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight on November 13, the display wows us and gives us the illusion that Pacquiao is busting through the window with a BOOM! Cool, right?! I, for one, can barely gird my loins. Continue Reading »
Even though it’s been more than a week since the election, there are still a few races being counted. I thought I’d give a quick wrap-up of what happened from an Asian American standpoint; this is by no means an exhaustive and comprehensive list, but some races that have been on my radar.
Nam Phan was happy with the post we did earlier on how he fought his way into The Ultimate Fighter reality show, so we managed to arrange this interview with him. We talk about such diverse subjects as the difficulties of cutting weight in an Asian American Family, the WEC/UFC merger, and advice for kids wanting to get into Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Here are some highlights:
What lessons you learned from other Asian Americans on the show like Phillipe Nover or Andy Wang? I have read that you know Andy Wang – did you get any particular advice from him?
I was supposed be on that season, but something came up, so I told Andy to take the spot for me. He became the first Asian American on The Ultimate Fighter. I asked him for any tips, and he said just be yourself. You wrestled in high school, I understand.
I wrestled in high school, and I wrestled one year in college. How was it making weight as part of an Asian American family?
It was tough. Back in the motherland, food is scarce. You get to America, there is a lot of food, they want you to eat and eat and get plump. They want you to eat, but you can’t eat. My mother got scared [when I cut weight]:“What are you doing? Are you on drugs or something?”
“No Mom, I’m in wrestling! Ma, it’s nothing – just wrestling.”
“I want you to eat! You’re too skinny!”
An article on the mounting pressure of Asian Americans — and yes, APA blogs — to stop putting so much damn pressure on Jeremy Lin and let him be a NBA rookie: “Lin captures fans dreams and desires. He’s become an icon, a shooting star (that’s not shooting well) that many Asian Americans want to tether their hopes for national respect as not a stereotype but as part of the nation … Lin, clearly, happy to be in the NBA with his hometown team, realizes though that the pressures are mounting even as the minutes might be dwindling. And for that, maybe we should take Simmons advice and ‘stop cheering for Jeremy Lin.’”
So recently, my wife tells me that there’s this cool new show premiering on Halloween called The Walking Dead. The show is based on a comic book series and has serious potential for those that crave a little bit of zombie apocalypse outside of the usual police dramas and reality television. Continue Reading »
Were you looking for a place to buy The Asian Grandmother’s Cookbook by Pat Tanumihardja, that we posted about here? Or maybe you finally decided to buy those Asian Fit sunglasses from Oakley, from that blog post you read two years ago?
Well, all of those products that you read about here on 8Asians or over on our shopping blog GASP! have been consolidated into the 8Asians’ Amazon Store. It’s as if Giant Robot had an awkward threesome with the Asian American aisle at Barnes & Noble and a Tila Tequila CD! Happy shopping!
This past Sunday, Michael & Kevin on The Amazing Race were eliminated. The first rule in The Amazing Race is to READ the damn clue; in segments of the St. Petersburg, Russia leg of the race, the instructions explicitly state that you had to walk and NOT take a taxi. One team made the same mistakes that Michael & Kevin had made, realized it, and then re-did those parts of the race. Continue Reading »
