The Colbert Report: Michelle Rhee

By John | Monday, December 6, 2010 | 2 Comments

Former controversial chancellor of the Washington D.C.’s Public Schools Michelle Rhee appeared on The Colbert Report last week. She discussed many of the challenges of improving the public education system in America. Her boss, the mayor of D.C., lost his bid for re-election and thus Rhee is out of a job, as the new mayor will be picking on a new chancellor. Rhee hadn’t decided what her next steps were going to be, but a quick Google today shows that she may be in line to head up education reform in Florida.

I’m originally from the northeast and my family relocated to Florida when I was a teenager. I have to say that following Rhee’s career I really hope she is involved with education reform in Florida. Speaking from personal experience the public school education system is a joke especially if you’re a transplant from another state. The pace and level at which they expect you to perform is way below other education systems. For instance, my sister was in elementary school when we moved here. They don’t even focus on memorizing times tables till 2nd to 3rd grade. Another example I had already took Geometry and Algebra at a public school in New Jersey, but here they don’t even cover those subjects until high school. The well-known reputation about Florida school education that everyone who grew up here knows that grade school is just regurgitating the information that the teacher writes on their power points slides. They don’t even bother changing the wording of the questions on assignments, quizzes and exams. I know everyone loves an easy A, but it’s gotten to the point where everyone has a 4.0 and everyone has straight A’s. It’s like the college football ranking system. You want to question a team’s undefeated record by their strength of schedule, well when you have teachers who just read from the slides word for word then it is easy to see how one can easily get an A. What kind of school has 4 valedictorians at graduation? I know at least 5 and in multiple class years. That’s the kind of everyone-is-special crap that puts nonsensical ideals in people’s minds further making them more unequipped to handle the harsh realities that not everyone is going to get the position or promotion. It really is a joke that is why when I got into college it was so laughable seeing how many people failed and dropped out because they tried to do the same tactics in high school. They were not prepared to run into professors who’ve come from different institutions from around the country who all have higher education standards than Florida and therefore teach with higher demands and expectations. If you’re not someone who takes the initiative to challenge yourself then the system will hurt your more than help you. How can these people expect to find jobs and compete against candidates whose education systems and schools better prepared them for the highly competitive nature of the job market and the real world? I digress, I’ve followed Rhee’s career and for the most part I agree with her approach and decisions. I mean the No Child Left Behind Act is a nice thought, but it is unrealistic to have a 100% passing rate as there is always going to be a bell curve of test results. However, I like her aggressive approach and I think it would be really interesting to see how she would help save the students of this god forsaken state known as Florida. That way the rest of the country can at least not laugh as hard when they think of us in Florida, but they probably still will.
