VIRAL LIKE SARS: Asian Burlesque Boy

By Moye | Wednesday, February 16, 2011 | 20 Comments

When a video of a young Asian boy dancing (in full costume) to Christina Aguilera’s Burlesque appears online, OF COURSE we’re going to do something about it.

Moye: How about this?
Ernie: Oh my god
Ernie: This is the same kid that did Wondergirls.
Ernie: I swear he’s being exploited.
Moye: It is the same boy!
Ernie: Where do they find stockings for 5 year old boys?
Moye: They’re for girls, DUH.
Moye: WHERE ARE HIS PARENTS?
Ernie: THEY ARE BEHIND THE CAMERA.
Moye: HAHAHAHA
Ernie: WHY DOES HIS DRESS HAVE HANDPRINTS ON THEM?
Moye: I DON’T KNOW.
Moye: OMG THE LIGHT FLASHES. HOME MADE STROBE LIGHT.
Ernie: I’m too busy rocking myself back and forth to notice.

Seriously, who is this kid?

I regret that when I developed Moodthingy, there isn’t an emotion that fully describes the numbness I feel at this very instant.

  • moye

@ErnieHsiung Just make an option that says “Asian Boy Dancing In Drag”

  • somebodysmom

this video and the others that he is in on you tube are ABUSIVE..it is sexualizing him and pedophiles are feeding off of these images. it is sad and infuriating to me that you a)think its funny. and b) had to put it on your blog for more adults to see. i reported them on you tube as abuse and only hope that there is some sort of agency who watches for soft kiddie porn on you tube…because that is what it is. who knows what else the person who was so “clever” as to teach him those moves and video him..who knows what else that person is doing. be responsible. dont perpetuate ugly things like this.
    thankyou.

  • KelLee

@somebodysmom I completely agree even though I haven’t seen the video – just the description alone gave me bad chills. The parents (unknowingly?) are pretty much grooming him to be exploited by a pedophile since they are teaching him that his value is based on his sexualized behaviours. Makes him an extremely easy target. The video has now been removed from YouTube and probably due to you having reported it.

it seems Little Mr. Sunshine is called Qiu Yu-Cheng 邱于承 and has a Facebook page

here he is on Taiwan TV back in May
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTkrJg_oYTU
with frame for frame comparisons of his dancing with Jolin Tsai’s

(it’s all OK as long as no one uses the word “Ori*nt”)

If it was any other country in the world, this kid would be the focus of a 20-20 broadcast; in Taiwan, he becomes a guest on a variety show. I love my people.

  • http://burdenofthought.wordpress.com An

I wish we could see the parents being interviewed. I can’t tell if they are exploiting him or letting him follow his dreams.

  • somebodysmom

yes, An, i hear what you are saying…but how does a 8 year old learn to grab his crotch, make porn faces and rub his chest? following his dream to dance and lipsync..that is one thing. he had to be taught to be sexy..kids dont just “know” that…and that is what bothers me.

  • http://burdenofthought.wordpress.com An

@somebodysmom While the sexy act is disturbing when performed by a child, especially since this child does it SO WELL, he could have easily learned all that from watching music videos. There are plenty of videos out there with children trying to emulate singers/dancers in music videos, and people think they are cute. I think the children are too young to really understand what “sexy” means – they are only copying what they see on TV. We are projecting our adult knowledge when we watch these videos.

However, it is one thing to watch our kids perform for us, it’s another to make videos and broadcast them. Being Asian, I can almost see it as a case of an Asian parent being overly indulgent in letting the child do what he wants, regardless of whether it is right or wrong. But I don’t know if that is the case.

  • somebodysmom

An, i accept your “proud ,indulgent parents/performance” statement. i can get that….but, from a child advocate/social justice/human trafficing/child porn perspective, the whole thing seems terribly off and scarey to me. Yes, maybe he has well meaning parents, maybe he doesnt really know what he is doing…..but what about the other adults who see this as a different form of “entertainment” ? i only said any of this out of concern for him..

  • EfrenBose

I wonder what’ll happen if this kid comes out as gay…would they have him start doing uber-butch routines?

  • EfrenBose

@moye @ErnieHsiung Maybe Ernie and I can do a drag routine and put it on here–or we can pretend to be this kid when he becomes an adult, and trying to do the same routine. ;)

  • http://www.erniehsiung.com/ Ernie H.

@EfrenBose @moye At least now I know what to be for Halloween.

  • moye

    @ErnieHsiung @EfrenBose I’ll be the pink background.

  • DinoRay

This is no big deal. I’ve been doing performances like this since I was a fetus. He is so copying me.

  • moye

@DinoRay Proof, please and thank you.

  • hi_nysha

I have to give props its cute, creepy but cute. why couldnt he do a more child-like song like when he did nobody lmao. Still its worth sharing ;)

    @An

Actually, the boy is a big hit in China. There are quite a few videos of him on YouTube performing and being interviewed on TV variety shows, including backstage preparations and makeup sessions. His parents support his talent and, apparently, so do the Chinese people.

I guess the Chinese are not as intolerant as we are led to believe, or maybe it is the West that is actually intolerant.

I think the boy is very talented and is no different than was Brooke Shields, Gary Coleman, Drew Barrymore, etc., etc., etc. While many of you are disgusted and judgemental, this child is laughing all the way to and from the bank.
