My daughter is only 5 years old and recently completed her first year of formal schooling, her year in kindergarten. Throughout the year, I could tell she was having more and more difficulty at school. In the mornings, she didn’t want me to leave when I dropped her off, and she just didn’t seem as excited about going as in the beginning of the year. We already knew she wasn’t going to attend the same school for first grade as she did for kindergarten, and when we told her, she seemed relieved.

It all ends here… Harry Potter fans. One of the most highly anticipated Hollywood films is Part 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (aka HP7 Part 2).
“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches … born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives … the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies …”
—Prophecy made to Albus Dumbledore by Sybill Trelawney
The movie opens Friday, 7/15/2011 which means people are going to be anxiously awaiting midnight screenings (the night of Thursday, 7/14) to be the first to see HP7, Part 2. But what about Part 1? If you’re anything like me, you want to see Part 1 & 2 together and while you can absolutely watch Part 1 on DVD and race over to the theater, how much fun would it be to watch them together as a marathon? That’s right, a special Invitation Only Harry Potter 7 Marathon will be held in Orange, CA and 8Asians has tickets!
Do you have a gripe with anyone? Call them out and win tickets for you and three of your friends to watch both parts of the final Harry Potter movie in one night! If you’re not in the Greater L.A. area, you can still enter to win the Runner Up prize of a t-shirt and an official poster. It all ends here… Read on!
With the NBA season over and the NBA draft completed just over a week ago, Golden State Warrior Jeremy Lin reflects back on his past year on his ups and downs in the NBA and D-League – from being initially un-drafted, to playing in the summer league, to be picked up by the Warriors to playing throughout the season. Check out Lin’s recent Bay Area talk at a church discussing how his faith has helped him along his basketball career.

Unfortunately for Garden Grove, CA residents, no longer can they enjoy their iced coffee served by nearly naked women. The Vietnamese “lingerie cafes” in Garden Grove, CA have been under fire recently for their scantily-clad waitresses, but now they will face new restrictions on just how far those waitresses can go. The new ordinance, put into effect last Friday, demanded that the women at the 37 cafes dress positively modestly: they were told to “cover up butt cracks, pubic regions, and breasts from the ‘top of the areola down.’” In addition, the ordinance banned smoking, arcade games, and tinted windows at the establishments themselves.
Bai Ling is back on TV with Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and now she’s opening up about being sexually abused while in the People’s Liberation Army: “She was pressed to have sex with her superiors, with one encounter leading to pregnancy and an abortion under an assumed name, Bai said, adding that other women serving with her in Tibet were also forced into sex and regularly plied with alcohol. Bai stressed that she blames individual officers and not the Chinese government for events that have haunted her life and work.” [H/T Marissa]

The web is being torn up by Cindy Chang from America’s Got Talent. She wowed the judges with her goofy laugh with snort in tow and a huge operatic voice. Singing Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Gianni Schicchi, Chang moved the audience and even Piers Morgan to a standing ovation and cheers for “Cindy!” And now they’re trying to take her down.
Expectations were high with Extraordinary Chambers, a play written by David Wiener and directed by Pam MacKinnon. Starring Francois Chau, Mather Zickel, Marin Hinkle, Greg Watanabe, and Kimiko Gelman, the play opened at the Geffen Playhouse on June 1st and ever since then I have been hearing rave reviews from fellow Asian American colleagues who have seen this show. But when it comes to theater, I usually discredit what I hear from anyone since critiques are not to be taken as word of gospel until you actually see it for yourself. So after a few weeks, I decided to finally check it out and watched the Saturday matinee performance before it closed.
It’s official — Priest, Min Woo Hyung’s graphic novel turned Hollywood film was announced one of the “Top Biggest Movie Flops of 2011 (So Far)” dictated by Yahoo! Movies: “The supernatural action film, based on the Korean graphic novel, was the most expensive movie ever made by Screen Gems, costing $60 million to produce. It earned $29.1 million domestically, but made up some ground overseas, where it earned $46 million.” But hey, at least it made a profit.
I had always wondered why– of all industries that a group of people could get into– it was the manicure business which Vietnamese Americans seemed to dominate, at least in California. In 2008, I read an article by L.A. Times reporter My-Thuan Tran entitled “A mix of luck, polish: Vietnamese dominance of the manicure trade started with the help of a U.S. star,” attributing the Vietnamese nail trade to actress Tippi Hedren, otherwise known as “that lady from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.”
This GoToMeeting.com commercial by Citrix is an ensemble piece where an Asian American woman has a “great idea” and needs to collaborate with her colleagues virtually (much like we do here at 8Asians.com!). In the past, I think I’ve used WebEx and Adobe Connect for web conferencing for work. Personally, I use Skype the most often when I need just to video conference with a friend. We definitely live in amazing times!
