Asians Behaving Badly: Giselle Esteban Charged With Murder Of Michelle Le

I vaguely remember the story about nursing student Michelle Le in late May this year, who disappeared after leaving a Hayward hospital during a break from a clinical rotation. Rewards were offered by the grief-stricken family, and police investigators seemed to have scoured the streets from information from various persons of interest. Yet, no arrests were made at the time.  Months have now gone by, and sad to say, we can assume that she is dead. Unfortunately, you need to have a body to call it a murder case.

Flash forward to today, where news reported that Giselle Esteban, a former high school friend of Le, was arrested in connection with the disappearance.

A Union City woman was charged today with murder in the slaying of a nursing student who vanished from a Hayward parking garage more than three months ago. Giselle Esteban…is accused of killing her former high school friend Michelle Le, 26, whose body hasn’t been found. Esteban has said that she hated Le and had blamed her for ruining her relationship with her former boyfriend, who is the father of their 5-year-old daughter. But she denied any involvement with Le’s disappearance.

Estaban was apparently a suspect early on, but there is still no body. The evidence seems to point in the direction of Esteban, which for Le’s family may prove to be some closure finally. But, the twist in the case is Estaban’s current pregnancy, which to me complicates the situation, and makes it even more sad and tragic, even if she is guilty. I am much more sympathetic to Le’s family – the loss of a daughter, sister, and love one is horrible, but I feel concerned for Estaban’s little one.

About Mihee

Mihee lives in the Mid-West with her husband, toddler-aged twins (yes, terrible twos is actually a thing), and baby #3. Though her reserve of brain cells is seriously depleted she is still passionate about Asian American culture, religion and social justice for marginalized people, stories about Korea, sports, and power naps. During the day, she spends a lot of time trying to remember which baby needs to eat or get a diaper change, mentoring and ministering to college students, occasionally taking a walk, writing, watching Sportscenter, or grabbing coffee. You can read her blog here.
