Back in 2009, we had blogged about Dartmouth hiring Dr. Jim Yong Kim as their new president – the first Asian American every to (and only the second “person of color”) lead an Ivy League university. At the time, I just assumed as an older Asian American, having been born in Korea with the original name as Kim Yong, that he might have some of a foreign accent. It’s really great to see an Asian American in an academic leadership position (or any leadership position for that matter).

Yahoo! Answers had so many “interesting” questions that I couldn’t fit it all onto one post. So here part 2 of my “favorite” Asian related questions. (You can read part 1 here.)

As I had blogged before as well as had interviewed AB 376 bill sponsor California State Assembly member Paul Fong, Governor Jerry Brown has just now signed the bill into law.

First, novelist Lisa See’s book, “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan”, garnered honorable mentions from the Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature. Then, the book was transformed into a movie and released earlier this year. Now, the “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan DVD ($26.99) is available for pre-order, set to ship November 1st. Directed by Wayne Wang, the movie features many Asian and Asian American actors like Archie Kao and Gianna Jun. The film runs 137 minutes, so it’s perfect for a girl’s night in.
The 8Asians Open Thread returns and it’s finally October! While we cover everything we can about the APA community, sometimes we just want to gossip about something else. Got anything to say or a question to ask? Looking for Halloween costume ideas? Looking for a new recipe? Here’s the place to share it. Have at it!

Apple’s former CEO, Steve Jobs passed away a couple of days ago and it caught many of us by surprise. On the day of October 5, 2011, we saw many people tweeting about it, updating their Facebook statuses, posting pictures and quotations of Steve Jobs on tumblr, and even cracking jokes about it. Jonathan Mak, a college student from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, designed this logo, which became a worldwide Internet sensation. Mak came up with the design in early August, but it is not until recently that it became very popular. Many merchandisers even used the logo on their products for sale. Now, Mak wants to copyright the logo and use the proceeds as funding for cancer research. Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer at age 56.

Real Steel is the current movie that is building the trend of board games as movies. Actually, this movie isn’t “officially” based on the popular Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot game. It is based on “Steel” a short story from 1956 by Richard Matheson.
Even so, I would like to think that Real Steel is in line with the grand tradition of movies like Clue, the upcoming Battleship, and, of course, the most awesome board game movie of all time: Jumanji.

Now there’s a question that probably has not been posed in the Asian American community. But I ask this question now, perhaps even on an impulse, after reading Gina Bianchini’s “Is there a female Mark Zuckerberg?” over at Fortune Magazine. I’d like to now take this question and reformulate it for an Asian American audience: Is there a female Tony Hsieh?
“Friend-Zoned Phil” is the latest meme with an Asian guy circulating the intarwebs, thanks to those crazy folks at Reddit.
Behold! The Friend-Zoned Phil Meme is an image series featuring an Asian guy “Phil,” who is in the friend zone– that is, a guy who has a really great girl friend that’s not a girlfriend.
Friend-Zoned Phil is flip side of “Friend Zone Fiona,” the pretty (white) chick who PUTS guys like Phil into the “friend zone.” But “Phil” is clearly an Asian man… what does this meme?!
We see lots of funny memes with Asians– Tiger Mom, High Expectations Asian Father, Cigar Guy, Rioting Hockey Fan, to name a few. And yes, they pretty much all play on Asian stereotypes to some degree– that’s part of the humor of it all.
