Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world. And sometimes, we talk about a recent Wall Street Journal article about U.S. Born Chinese “returning to China” when most were never there in the first place. [EDITOR'S NOTE: The title has since been edited to say "Back in China" rather than "Return to China." But the argument still holds.]
Mihee: U.S.-Born Chinese, Back in China to Set Up Shop.
Joz: How is it a “return” to China? Yay, perpetual foreigners.

“Test Drive” by Jin Akanishi featuring Jason Derulo is currently #1 on the iTunes Dance Album Chart. If you like the song, I’m sure you’ll agree that the video makes it so much hotter. It has everything you need: the dark warehouse, hot girls, legs for miles, lights and speed. For the most part, the hooded and shaded Jin Akanishi could be anyone… for a second I thought he was Eminem. But at the very end, he drives into the daylight and ta-dah! Hottest Japanese guy you’ve ever seen. Continue Reading »
On December 3, 2009 at South Philadelphia High School, 26 Asian immigrant students were assaulted by classmates, the majority of them African American. Thirteen of those attacked ended up in the emergency room.
The Hyphen Magazine article “Are You Picking On Me?” by Helen I. Hwang goes in detail and in depth about the event and what went down that tragic day. What’s most disturbing is the way the district and the school handled the situation that day and the long time problem of bullying of API heritage students at that campus. There was an attempt to mute the race-based aspect of the bullying and attacks, and 80 API students had to boycott the school and have outside community support and intervention in order change the unsafe environment that was specifically and especially hostile to API.
The first step to a good meal is a good knife. This Japanese Bunka Knife ($65) is a mix between a Japanese cleaver and a chef’s knife. It’s made of high carbon steel, meaning that its blade is lighter, thinner and lasts longer than the everyday stainless steel blade (not to mention it looks really cool.) A little maintenance is involved (if it’s not properly dried it can rust) but it’s worth it that will more than pay for itself in the long run.
So as many of you know, I have this unhealthy obsession for The Hunger Games. I actually think it’s a true story and I think the characters of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale are real people — just like Bella, Edward and Jacob are real people.
I am totally joking. I don’t think The Hunger Games are real (maybe just a little bit) — but I am totally excited for the new movie based on the Suzanne Collins novels about a dystopian world where the country is divided into 12 districts and is ruled by a tyrannically polite government. Each year, there is something called The Hunger Games where each district randomly picks one boy and one girl to go into an arena and they all fight for their lives, leaving one person standing.

A lot of pop music nowadays seem like it comes off an assembly line. Sure, it may be fun to dance to but once you dig into it there’s no substance. Leave it up to Scott Tang to inject some life into the otherwise stale pop scene. Already having released three crtitically-acclaimed albums, he’s back for more with his newest single “Outsiders” with a music video directed by filmmaker NaRhee Ahn. Continue Reading »

You’ve probably seen them. A “cute” picture with a “clever” quote about life. They are posters that are meant to be motivational but they just make you feel sad because they are either cliche or lame. Most likely both. I prefer the (un)motivational posters. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, they are the evil step brother of the “normal” motivational variety. They have the picture and the quote but they are trying to be funny and ironic (in that good way).
China’s been up to something and everyone wants to know what it’s about: “New photos have appeared in Google Maps showing unidentified titanic structures in the middle of the Chinese desert…It’s located in Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu, north of the Shule River, which crosses the Tibetan Plateau to the west into the Kumtag Desert…The tracks are perfectly executed, and they seem to be designed to be seen from orbit.” So, any theories of what this could be?
American singer-songwriter and fashion designer Gwen Stefani is apparently launching a clothing line for kids called Harajuku Mini for Target, launching November 13th. I don’t know about you, but the kid below looks a bit too young to be dressing and posing as a hipster. But I’ll have to take a look for myself and see if there is anything cute for my 10-month-old niece to wear!

Inevitably, when discussing San Francisco politics, one will read about a behind-the-scenes “power broker” named Rose Pak. I haven’t really blogged about her because, to be honest, I did not know much about her. Pak was one of the driving forces to get Ed Lee appointed as interim mayor of San Francisco, as well as influencing him to run for mayor, despite Lee’s initial promise not to as a condition of becoming interim mayor.

…and most want to come to the US. Look, up in the air. There go our real estate valuations. (I kid, I kid.) (Sort of.)
I’m sure the Chinese government is trying to keep their millionaires there, but it’s interesting that education for their children is their top reason for emigrating, with capital preservation and politics right behind.

If you haven’t been following the You Offend Me You Offend My Family crew, then there’s a small storm of controversy brewing over an article written by Sung Kang over CBS’ travesty of a show, Two Broke Girls.
We can scream online all day WITH ALL CAPS regarding the racial caricatures of the show, but ultimately at the end of the day it’s down to one question: do I take the role or turn it down and keep my dignity?
