Finally! After months of being teased by the words “artisan noodle” and luscious HD photos of bowls of ramen in the window, Tsujita opened for lunchtime ramen service at the end of October. The first U.S. shop to open from the Nidaime Tsujita chain in Tokyo serves two choices of ramen: tonkotsu – thin and straight style hakata noodles in pork broth, or tsukemen – the thicker and slightly curly dry noodles, which you dip into a separate cup of broth. I work a few blocks away from “the Little Tokyo of the Westside” Sawtelle Boulevard and have tried all of the ramen shops on the street, so when my Co-worker raved about Tsujita and declared that he could taste the “soul of a pig” in their broth, I had high expectations.
Given the recent comments on 8Asians lately, I think it’s time to remind everyone of this again: Personal attacks against other commenters are not permitted. You may question or argue about content, but not attack individuals. Comments that devolve into ad hominem attacks, intentionally bait others, or are deliberately disruptive may be deleted, and failure to respect fellow participants could result in removal or blocked access.

UCLA students seem to all want to stand out and make a difference–from Alexandra Wallace to Chris Jeon, etc. Recently, we stumbled across a tumblr page that provided all the useful information a fellow Bruin would want to know. Christine Kim, another UCLA student wanted to be different by instead of just letting the tuition hike affect her, she found ways to deal with it and share it with others on her website called Tips to Save at UCLA, which was launched in mid-July, has over 90,000 visitors now.

A new study from the University of Texas shows that Asian Americans are less likely to use corporal punishment than other ethnic and racial groups.
In the study authored by Elizabeth Gershoff, using a sample of 20,000 kindergartners and their parents, she found that 89% of black parents, 79% of white parents, 80% of Hispanic parents and 73% of Asian parents said they have spanked their children.
I actually saw this commercial on a pre-roll video for this past week’s segment on 60 Minutes posted online. The commercial features Randall Park, who I most recently saw in an HBO Go commercial. From what I recall, I’ve also seen him in the Ally Bank commercial earlier this year; the first time I recall seeing Park was in a commercial for Wells Fargo.
The 8Asians Open Thread is back after a brief hiatus. Don’t ask where it’s been. You don’t want to know. Today is 11/11/11 which means it’s Nigel Tufnel Day which means right now, we’re turning everything all the way to 11. So any other fans of Spinal Tap out there? Got anything else you want to say? We’re here and we’re listening. Have at it.
In television, the movies, or maybe even in real life, I’m sure we’ve heard the words, “Even if you were the last man on earth, I would never have sex with you.” Well, how about in a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies? Even an Asian American man can get a white girl in that situation!
I’ve been watching The Walking Dead ever since the AMC show premiered, or as much as I can watch because zombies give me the creeps. I don’t think anybody has produced such “realistic” and creepy looking zombies for a regularly televised program like this show has. In this particular scene, I think this is the first time I think I’ve seen an Asian American male, played by Steve Yeun, in a love scene with a white woman. I mean, I’ve seen television and movies scenes where an Asian American man dancing with or kissing a white woman (with their clothes on), but not taking off their clothes and having implied sex.
Warning: spoilers from the episode after the jump.
After reading Akrypti’s post on Asian men as villains, I really appreciated this video of Mark Munoz, a strong, powerful Asian guy who can kick butt but isn’t a trash talking heel. He is at a press conference held after he TKO’ed Chris Leben at UFC 138′s main event. Munoz genially covers a variety of topics, including an epiphany during a training session with the current UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva who he wants to challenge for the title.
Underground hip hop music producer Deep Watters, AKA: Brian Watters, a hapa from the San Francisco Bay Area and President of the urban clothing label Teruo Artistry, recently dropped a dope mixtape, #darkroom, with Bay Area rapper Prophet. If you like hip hop, then you’ll be sure to like this. Deep Watters’ beats are dark but catchy. Prophet talks about hip hop standards like smoking out and making money but he also talks about the personal struggles. This mixtape reminded me why I love hip hop. Download the album here.

I should begin with the caveat that I have never reviewed a play before.
And while I enjoy going to the theater from time to time, I would hardly consider myself an informed critic.
And now that I’ve gotten my excuses out of the way, I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed the opening night performance of The Language Archive, which took place Wednesday night at the David Henry Hwang Theater in Little Tokyo.
The play is an exploration of how love, language, meaning, and relationships intersect, all portrayed through a mix of humor, philosophical meanderings, and emotional gravity. The East West Players did a very nice job hitting these various notes through most of the play, with my personal favorites being Ryun Yu as George and Jennifer Chang as Emma. Continue Reading »
From Korea Times: “The Lorena Ochoa Invitational starts Thursday for a four-day run in Guadalajara, Mexico. In the past, Korean American Michelle Wie won this event in 2009 and Korea’s Kim In-kyung was victorious last year. This is the last regular competition on the LPGA Tour this year. World No. 1 and money list leader Tseng Ya-ni of Taiwan will also take part. The only three players from the top 10 who will be missing are Choi Na-yeon, and Ahn Sun-ju and Shin Ji-yai, but Pak Se-ri, Amy Yang, and Seo Hee-kyung will compete.”
