Remember the highly-coveted NINJA WINS t-shirt we unveiled with Blacklava for Comic-Con last year?
Designed by the fabulous Christine Miguel of NIWE Style Clothing, the fast-selling shirt has been one of the most popular designs at the Blacklava booth at events like Comic-Con and the TN Party.
Thanks to our partners Ryan Suda & his entire team at Blacklava, you can order the shirt online but if you act fast, you can get it as a late holiday gift from 8Asians!
More on the concept of the shirt:
Ahh, Pirates Versus Ninjas – it’s the topic people the world over have debated for centuries, if by “the world over” you mean “internet bulletin boards frequented by sixteen year olds,” and by “centuries” you mean “however long memes last, which is like two or three years.”
Featuring items for Asian Americans everywhere, Blacklava is a grassroots organization whose mission is to raise questions about how Asian Americans are viewed in today’s society. They try to put themselves in the position where they can “improve, learn, teach, and to be challenged.”
Blacklava features a wide range of items, from t-shirts to mugs to taiko sticks. Each item is created with the purpose of sending a message, and you can send it in style.
Do some shopping at Blacklava and get 10% off of a minimum purchase of $25 with promo code: 8ASIANS10

Designed by Alexandra Peng Charton, with over fifteen years of experience in the industry, TC Charton is an eyewear line for Asian features. The first line of its kind designed in North America, the company creates both opthalmic frames and sunglasses. Unlike other “Asian fit” eyewear lines, they offer numerous styles to address different fit concerns.
TC Charton is modern and sleek, with a design philosophy of “everyday luxury”. Men, women and children can get a pair that complements their unique features. And, should you find yourself having trouble picking out a frame, you can send a headshot to Alexandra Peng and she will suggest the best fit for you.
TC Charton is giving two lucky 8Asians readers, one male and one female, a chance to win the sunglasses of their choice!

Brought together in 2010, Aziatix is a new Asian American music group which features three members: Eddie Shin, Flowsik, and Nicky Lee. The group released their first album, Nocturnal, this year. The album received high praise, and their first self-titled EP climbed to the top of the music charts in both Korea and Taiwan.
Nocturnal, which we reviewed this past summer, is an amazingly heartfelt fusion of R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop. It features achingly beautiful songs like “Go”, “Cold” and “Slippin’ Away”.
Over at GASP!, after hearing the CD we were happy to say that “if you haven’t checked them out yet, start with their new acoustic version of Go–your ears (and eyes) will thank you.”
Aziatix is giving three lucky 8Asians readers a chance to win a copy of their album!

Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world. And sometimes, people talk about Yu Darvish, the half-Japanese, half-Iranian pitching phenom, while other people stand around politely and think to themselves when the next season of American Idol will come out since they know nothing about baseball. (And of course, that someone is me.) Let us watch, shall we?
Joz: The Texas Rangers win negotiating rights to Yu Darvish.
Russell from GASP!: Just watched this video [from mlb.com]. Looks to be a good deal if they can snag him. Their pitching roster is already good, with them reaching the world series two years in a row, if he can pitch as well as Cliff Lee I’m sure he’ll be welcome. On that note, whatever happened to Okajima and Matsuzaka for the Red Sox?
I saw the thirty second version of this Bank of America commercial while watching cable news this past week, and was blown away. The commercial is about a small Seattle-based Asian grocery and gift store chain Uwajimaya and about how they got started. The store was started after World War II by a Japanese American, after this profiled woman’s father was able to get a loan from Bank of America.
I think this is definitely the first commercial I have ever seen that has even mentioned or alluded to the Japanese American concentration camps. If I were a Japanese American and saw this, I think this commercial would just win me over to bank at BOA.
Researchers from University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario developed an HIV vaccine that uses whole HIV virus, but it is engineered so that it cannot cause HIV in recipients. The vaccine has been shown to stimulate strong immune response during tests on lab animals. In addition, toxicology tests show that the vaccine induces no adverse effects. The SAV001 vaccine is developed by Dr. Chil-Yong Kang and his team over the last ten years. The vaccine is found to be safe, and they have already received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical trials on humans in January.
