The team who created the successful 2010 Asian Pacific Male Calendar are creating a new reality show based on “their behind-the scenes experiences of creating the culturally diverse calendar which simultaneously raised thousands of dollars for charity” that will hopefully go into production early next year. Those involved are excited by “the way the show is intended is to prove that a group of average, every day people can find ways to give back and have fun doing it. Good reality TV doesn’t have to reach for the lowest denominator and hopefully this show can prove that.” It should be interesting to see what comes out of this project – potentially lots of feel-good-ness and inspiration. Here’s another very cute commercial by Target, highlighting what a little girl can do with pots and pans while Mom is preparing to make Christmas cookies for baking. But I think Target’s over-protective Mom and daughter commercial is a little funnier.

From a breaking Reuters news report: Kim Jong Il, according to North Korean news, has died. There will be plenty of websites talking about the life and times of the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the state of North Korea, a country known for its self-reliance called juche. There will probably be a segment on the “diplomatic theatrics” of his meeting with Bill Clinton for the release of Laura Ling and Euna Kim.
But here at 8asians – and, let’s face it, most Americans under the age of 40 – he was seen as a person so out of touch with western society that he was the endless source of mockery, from being the subject of eHarmony parody videos and weird rap videos to bad Halloween costumes and having a cameo on 30 Rock, albeit played by Margaret Cho.
He’ll be missed by millions upon millions of North Koreans who will be sent to labor camps if they don’t miss him properly.

From 8Asians Reader Min: “Art Dealers Get Tough as $83 Million Chinese Vase Goes Unpaid. [I guess there are] First World Problems… and then there [are] 1% Problems.”
I work part-time at an Asian art house and this isn’t necessarily a 1% problem. According the the article, the vase was found in a “routine house cleaning.” Speaking from personal experience, you never know who the owner of the item is, especially since it doesn’t seem to have come from a known private collector with provenance– this could be a life-changing sale for the owner. Bainbridges of London may seem like it caters to the 1% but a lot of times, museums and educational institutions are the sellers/buyers of such items; it sounds like a deadbeat Chinese buyer is the problem here.
Ever hear of the Wu Tang? No, not the rap group. Also known as Wu Dang, they are the Daoist martial arts legends and styles that are historically connected to the ethereally beautiful Wu Dang Mountains. If you’ve heard of Tai Chi, then you’ve heard of one of the main Wu Dang styles of martial arts. The Wu Dang temple looks a lot like the one that Po from Kung Fu Panda (Jack Black) climbs up in order to geek out over the Furious Five. And yes, this is where the Wu Tang Clan rap group got their name from.

It’s truly refreshing to see another Asian-American musician in the industry, especially as a student in the midwest at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Asian-Americans’ are a rarity on campus, so when I first saw Charlie Kim performing two years ago at the Memorial Union Terrace at night in front of a huge audience on a warm summer night, I was ecstatic. He’s come a long way since then and now he’s really making noise on campus.
From Yahoo News: A former North Korean soldier owns and operates SPTV, which streams North Korean television for seven hours a day from 0800 GMT and edited footage is also posted online the next day. While some venues that offer North Korean news seems illegal, this particular source remains untouched by the South Korean government. The site attracts thousands of viewers each day, namely it seems, those who are doing research on North Korea.
Type I and Type II diabetes are two different conditions, but with young Asian Americans, the conditions are often hard to distinguish compared to other ethnic groups. For example, white type II diabetes patients are usually older and overweight while Asian Americans with type 2 diabetes are often young and normal weight. White type I diabetes patients usually have autoimmune responses against pancreas beta cells while type I Asian American diabetics have that response less than 50% of the time. As a result, many Asian Americans are misdiagnosed. Dr William Hsu, M.D., of the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School, says “Diabetes in Asian Americans is somewhat of a mystery.”
Every so often, we at GASP! get the opportunity to try some amazing products. This week, we tried on five pairs of sunglasses by TC Charton–a company which is specifically designed to fit Asian faces. All the pairs (both opthalmic frames and sunglasses) are designed by Alexandra Peng, who was inspired to create an eyewear collection that took into account Asian facial structure as well as skin tone. In Spring 2011, a kid’s collection was launched as well, injecting some style into the bland rows of frames. You can read the entire write-up on our shopping blog, GASP!
