Asian American Commercial Watch: Heineken’s The Date

By John | Thursday, May 24, 2012 | 5 Comments

This commercial has been on the air for a while, but a reader passed a link along. When I first saw this commercial, I liked it. I like Heineken beer, and have even done the Heineken experience tour in Amsterdam. However, I wasn’t too sure what the point of the commercial was. This “date” takes place in what appears to be either in the 1920s Shanghai or Hong Kong or in a themed restaurant of the time. I do find the Asian actress,  Samantha Rex, attractive and the white actor, Guillaume Dolmans, somewhat entertaining. The look and the feel of the commercial as well as the production value is great, and you can take a look even at the behind-the-scenes of the commercial. But still, is this commercial supposed to highlight what kind of fun time you can have with Heineken during a date?

I tried looking at the behind the scenes footage but it says you have to be 19 or older to view it. *Sigh*
I have liked this commercial ever since the first time I absentmindedly watched it on television; when I heard the Bollywood song towards the end, I rejoiced. Not often do we get to hear Bollywood songs in Western commercials!
The actress’s ethnicity surprised me because I thought she was Caucasian or Biracial .

I really like their fun date.

Not a big fan of the commercial.  Everyone in the commercial is ethnic, EXCEPT for the lead male being caucasian.  Ugh.

The thought had indeed crossed my mind but I didn’t for two reasons: I’m too lazy and not at all desperate.
