Judge Dismisses Charges Against Truant Honor Student Diane Tran

By Jeff | Thursday, May 31, 2012 | 6 Comments

Judge Lanny Moriarty has dismissed contempt charges against truant honor student Diane Tran. Tran was sentenced to a night in jail and a $100 fine for missing classes because of exhaustion from working two jobs and an intense academic workload.  Attorney Brian Wice took up her case pro bono, and now she will not have a criminal record, which could have affected her negatively in the future. In other good news, $100,000 has been raised to help her with expenses.

Sure, but she still went to jail, even after that first KHOU news report came out. She may have had the charges dismissed, but she still did the time.

It’s good to hear they got dismissed. I kind of do understand why they have truancy laws, but like many have said, we all need to take into account all the factors involved.

Yeah, that part does suck though.
From what I hear, it’s possible that she could seal her records for the sake of future opportunities like college or jobs. In a way, it’s redundant because the case is out in the open, but like the sympathy sentiment does work for some people.

why did her parents abandon her?

There a number of questions like that that have not been answered, including how the money for her will be used.  This article here brings up many of them:

Having it not on the record is very important in my understanding as in the state of Texas, certain professions (ie: judge, lawyer, doctor… etc) does not accept people with criminal record. That is, if my memory serve me correctly.
