8 Asians

Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world. And sometimes, we talk about a recent news item about Zhen Yang, a convenience store owner, who spanked a would-be thief into submission before the cops arrived. And our own memories of being in a somewhat similar situation with our parents.

Mike: What, he didn’t use his feather duster?

Joz: I once got the wire end of a fly swatter.  Ow!  (But I totally deserved it.)

Jasmine: My mom used a flip-flop on several occasions. Also she’d sometimes throw it if I ran with alarming accuracy.

Tim: I used to get a a ruler on the back of the hand for not remembering my multiplication tables.

Xxxtine: I got my dad’s foot.

Mike: Mine are all pretty vanilla. Feather duster, belt, hand.

Moye: Ruler, hairbrush but mostly just the hand.

William: A hard but flexible plastic stick that literally thwacked the schizzle outta me. I copped it a few times when I was younger…and older.

Koji: Am I the only one that never got spanked? Or punished?

JohnnyC: Back in my day, we’d enjoy the champagne and enjoy a few hor d’oeuvres, turn on some music, get to know each other before dancing a bit–because you know, you’ve got to keep it classy before putting your hands on that assy.

Joz: I’m so disturbed by JohnnyC’s comment, seeing that the rest of us were thinking about being spanked by our PARENTS. o_O
