Jeremy Lin in Public Service Announcement about Dating Violence

Jeremy Lin has joined Eli Manning, David Beckham and others in this Public Service Announcement about dating violence. This is was produced by the White House as part of the 1is2many campaign. According to the White House:

“Despite the significant progress made in reducing violence against women, young women continue to face the highest rates of dating violence and sexual assault. In the last year, one in 10 teens has reported being physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend. One in five young women has been sexually assaulted while in college.”

This video joins other efforts by Asian Americans to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The fact that anyone finds this story “Boring” as opposed to inspirational indicates the level of ignorance we as a community are up against, about dating and domestic violence. Perhaps in many of our cultures we find acceptible or at east tolerable? But it is wrong as muual respect is something we should strive for and to see folks already in the limelight help bring attention to this problem is a good thing.

I do appreciate the message of no DV against women, but as a woman I do also find this video patronizing and also very one-sided on the problem of DV in our society. First of all, the worst abuse of power is when anyone with power, regardless of gender, uses it to hurt another. Also, DV abuse is of course not just physical but psychological, and there are definitely many women who are extremely psychologically and physically abusive to men, and male victims of abuse and other forms of DV are so extremely marginalized due to ingrained societal chauvinistic views that it re-victimizes them. If this is a video about DV, then it should deal with DV perpetrators and victims of both genders. Otherwise, frame it as “DV against women” specifically, to which I would wonder why there’s all this focus on DV against women and none on DV against men.

As a women this issue has been going on for quite some time. I’m 25 years-old when I speak to my mom about this issue. By the way she is 53 has been going on when she was a teen girl. This issue expands across the bored. Black and hispanic women a less likely to report domestic violence. I know many of my aunts who were married to both mentally and pysically abuse by their husband would not dare call the police. It is the same among hispanic also. My aunts on my mother side who are hispanic wouldn’t call the police when their husbands beat them. Areyou kidding me. You either beat him or take it. Its an issue with women across the board. The fear and dealing with the legal mess of it all.

But for men its a more worse case. My eldest brother was a victim of domestic violence. He wouldn’t press charges against his now ex-wife. Till this day he won’t speak about it. I can’t imagine how many young men were or are victims to rape,domestic violence and other sexual abuse. Even though it is hadr for women to deal with domestic and sexual abuse. But support is out there sense our society is so aware. But for a male its far more grim and ego hurting.
