Having an Asian Moment: Sullivan and Son On TBS

The new show Sullivan and Son premieres this week on TBS and I am sure everyone is excited about it. I’ve been seeing tons of ads for this show that seems to have appeared out of thin air and I couldn’t be happier that there is a sitcom that not only has an Asian lead but also a very culturally diverse cast.

We are definitely making strides folks.

But the main question is, “Will I watch the premiere?”

The answer is “No.” I am probably going to get crucified for that, but based on the premise, it’s just not my kind of show. I am not necessarily a bro/bar sitcom kind of guy (I was never into Cheers). Just because it has an Asian lead, doesn’t necessarily mean I have to be a diehard fan of the show. I support Asians breaking into the biz but that doesn’t mean I have to smother them with my desperate love. I save that for my dating life.

However, that doesn’t mean I won’t give the show a chance. I will watch it in the near future — and why shouldn’t I? The cast is led by stand-up comedian Steve Byrne — and I like comedy. He is joined by Jodi Long who was the mom in Margaret Cho’s short-lived and brilliant All American Girl (which I ADORED) as well as Vivian Bang who just looks damn fun. Finally, I have to mention the paternal figure on the show, Dan Lauria. Yes, I know he is a white man, but he was the dad on The Wonder Years! As Kevin Arnold strict dad, he always scared the crap out of me! It won’t be at the top of my DVR queue but I will get to it sooner than later.

Thanks for rating this! Now tell the world how you feel - Share this on Twitter and on Facebook.
(Nah, it's cool; just take me back.)

Ah, how wonderful is it to have a comedy back on TV that echoes of Cheers! I don’t know how many other people out there have been eagerly awaiting for this show to come on but I am definitely curious to see if it is good quality. Nowadays shows we think are good get cancelled and the ones we hate stay on the air. I’m going to be at work so I have to wait until the next day to see it. So a Dish co-worker suggested the remote access app which will allow me to stream live TV or anything I’ve recorded to my Smartphone or iPad. It’s works great with the Sling Adapter and Hopper DVR I just got which makes it so easy to watch TV. So tonight on my train ride home I’m going to be hopefully laughing and hoping that TBS has produced a gem in the wasteland that is TV in 2012.

Premiere so-so, many snappy but predictable one liners. 2nd show had some character development but still mainly snappy one liners. It appears Steve’s mom will be the glue that holds the show together, you can’t go wrong with an abrasive, sharp tongued Korean immigrant mother in the cast.
    .
No Cheers but with some care, thought and depth the show could last several seasons.

dang, you didn’t throw in 10 choices of delicious and healthy Subway sandwiches that are less than 500 calories and 12 grams of fat when you get home?

i may give it a shot, just because it has a diverse cast. i will say that steve byrne is just so-so to me, at least based on his stand-up comedy.

I don’t know when I saw the name I thought of Stanfard and Son. The black TV show from the 70s not cheers for a second.
