Diabetes & Asian Americans, Part II: How to Make Diabetes Sexy & Fashionable

“When he asked me what was wrong, I could barely utter the word ‘diabetic’. When I finally did, my voice cracked, and I cried just a little.” This is the story of Marianne Szeto and how she discovered she was diabetic. Both of her parents have type 2 diabetes. Marianne herself has type 1, however. A Series on Diabetes & Asian Americans Today’s entry is the second in a 3-part series on Asian Americans and [...] Continue »

Diabetes & Asian Americans, Part I: Asian Americans More Likely to Have Diabetes

Diabetes & Asian Americans, Part I: Asian Americans More Likely to Have Diabetes

“It was January 23rd, 2002. I had been dehydrated for two days now. I was weary and confused, but other than that, I was a healthy, active 23 year-old. But that morning, I woke up slowly, crawled to the bathroom, and vomited. Breaking out into a cold sweat, I dragged myself to my parent’s room.” So started Marianne Szeto’s story on how she discovered she was diabetic. A Series on Diabetes & Asian Americans This [...] Continue »

Asian Americans Burglarized Because They Are Less Likely To Speak Up

Asian Americans Burglarized Because They Are Less Likely To Speak Up

Households listed with an Asian surname have been the target of a rash of burglaries in the New England area. This has been happening since 2008. Poughkeepsie police are warning residents about burglaries in Westchester County, NY and Stamford, CT that are aimed at Asian Americans. Five burglaries were reported in June and July of 2010. Ten additional burglaries were reported in nearby towns. Even more have been reported all around the greater New York [...] Continue »

Book Details 1911 Massacre of Chinese Immigrants in Torreon, Mexico

Book Details 1911 Massacre of Chinese Immigrants in Torreon, Mexico

The first immigrants from Mexico weren’t Mexican; they were illegal Chinese immigrants. I know. Me sorprenden tambien. That’s according to the meticulous research by Robert Chao Romero, an author and assistant professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies in UCLA. Born in East LA, Romero is a Chino/Mexicano: his father is Mexican and his mother is Chinese. After getting a J.D. from UC Berkeley, he realized his passions lay not in law, but in his heritage. Ramiele Malubay Makes Me Feel Dirty, So Dirty

Ramiele Malubay Makes Me Feel Dirty, So Dirty

When Ernie wrote about Ramiele Malubay, the 20-yo Filipina on this season’s American Idol, I thought, “Hey, she’s pretty damn talented! That’s a good voice!” Then I thought the same thing Brian thought: “That Ramiele is an absolute cutie. And I feel like a creep.” So when I saw Jen’s post on Disgrasian, “Boobs. Oh My God…Boobs.“, I felt more than just being a creep. I felt… dirty, so dirty. Despite feeling like a dirty [...] Continue »

Asian Fit Goggles: My Dilemma with Sunglasses is Finally Over

Asian Fit Goggles: My Dilemma with Sunglasses is Finally Over

For a long time, it was hard for me. [Cue violin music] All the sunglasses I’d buy in the stores were so big and round. Not a good fit for my chinky eyes. But now Oakley has answered my prayers! [Cue happy jazzy music] My dilemma with sunglasses is finally over! Thanks to these Asian Fit sunglasses from Oakley! (heh heh heh) But in all seriousness… This is an interesting way to address a very [...] Continue »

Reducing Lactose Intolerance

Reducing Lactose Intolerance

On a totally unrelated note, when jozjozjoz mentioned latose intolerance, it reminded me of an experiment I tried. I, like many Asian Americans I know, turned lactose intolerant a few years ago. And it totally sucked ass. No more Cold Stones and Ben & Jerrys. Goodbye Pizookies. Hello soy milk. To be fair, this isn’t a case just for Asian Americans. A lot of people are lactose intolerant, all around the world. It’s just that, [...] Continue »

Lil’ Kim Goes Asian – and Dim Sum

She’s also been seen wearing that same outfit, so I guess she must really dig it. Extra kudos goes to krismar for funniest comment eva: “SHE HAS THE MICHAEL JACKSON RACE CHANGING DISEASE…..” Hehehe.

How To Properly Eat Sushi

New to sushi? Want to make sure you eat it properly? Watch this. In case you didn’t get it, this is comedy. Japanese comedy at its best. It was created by the Japanese comedy troupe The Rahmens. (Get it? The Rahmens? HA! Oh man that cracks me up.) If you’re familiar with Japanese customs, you’ll find this even funnier. I didn’t know this at first, but a friend told me that traditional Japanese restaurants will [...] Continue »

Robin Zhou’s “Latinos Lag Behind in Academics”

Remember Kenneth Eng, the deranged kid who wrote the article, “Why I Hate Blacks”? (Now there’s someone who’s 24 cans short a case of beer.) I thought of him when I read this article by Robin Zhou the other day, entitled: “Latinos Lag Behind in Academics“. Now, Zhou’s article isn’t as blatantly hateful and racist as Eng’s, but the same level of cultural stereotyping and ignorance is there. His central theme is that Latino parents [...] Continue »

Body found on Mount Tamalpais is that of missing IRS agent

Body found on Mount Tamalpais is that of missing IRS agent

I’m not really sure what to write. I just heard that the body found on Mount Tamalpais is indeed Veronica Ruiz’s. She died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, reports SFGate. I’m conflicted about writing this. Not just because its such a painful subject, but because news reports of suicides can sometimes lead to copycat suicides. I’ve known friends and acquaintances who’ve had to deal with seemingly insurmountable depression and anxiety before. [...] Continue »
