Just Kidding Films: Pushing Asian Stereotype Boundaries

Since 2007, Bart Kwan and Joe Jo of Just Kidding Films have been pushing the boundaries of the Asian stereotype on YouTube with their unique perspectives and outrageous comedic flavor. With similar comparisons to Peter Chao and The Notorious MSG,  their alter egos (The Uncos) have become a well-known staple in the YouTube community as a spoof of two middle-aged Vietnamese badasses with ridiculously exaggerated accents that love to party and get it on with [...] Continue »

8Questions with “The Durrian” Editors

8Questions with “The Durrian” Editors

An Asian American news satire blog called The Durrian has made quite a splash in just its second week of existence. Similar to the concept of The Onion, the satirical publication puts their very own unique twist on the way they present their stories. Sarcastically claiming to be the “number 3 source for American-Asian news,” The Durrian’s articles parody current events, celebrities, as well as real/fictional happenings in the Asian American media. Although the focus [...] Continue »

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Joseph Vincent

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and I hope all of you are getting into the holiday spirit as Christmas rolls around the corner! In an effort to get all of you in the holiday spirit, I wanted to share a video I directed/produced with YouTube sensation/singer/songwriter Joseph Vincent. The song of choice was JV’s own rendition of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and I thought it would be a nice idea to spread [...] Continue »

One on One with Beau Sia

Every now and then, we often come across certain events in our lives that define who we are now. These moments appear to be simple on the surface, but for individuals like Beau Sia, he can recall every vivid detail of how he came to be the famous slam poet that we all know and love to this day. Beau and I discovered each other through our mutual connections and throughout the last year, we [...] Continue »

Connie Lim and The Making of “The Hunted”

If you happened to watch the Asian Community Fund (APCF) PSA posted last week, you’ll notice a fresh new face in that video.  Connie Lim is one of LA’s best kept secrets, but hopefully not for long. Influenced by artists like Imogen Heap, Zero7, Feist, Morcheeba, Portishead, Natalie Merchant, Nina Simone and Bill Withers, Lim has created a different musical genre of what she calls “retrotronica”: a blend of old school songwriting and electronic sentiment. [...] Continue »

All About ChannelAPA.com

Over the last year that I’ve produced content for channelAPA.com, I thought it was interesting that we never actually had a video of our own to explain what it is that we do. Fortunately, we’ve just compiled a promotional spot that gives you the rundown of what we’re all about. In this video, we’ve included just a handful of the many talented artists and public figures that have helped make our online broadcast become what [...] Continue »

An Interview with Kaba Modern’s Finest, Mike Song

In the midst of all this Rain vs. Stephen Colbert buzz, I thought it would be nice to share a cool dance/interview with all of you that I shot with Kaba Modern’s very own Mike Song. Many of you might remember Mike and his group from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew: Season 1 after making a huge run up to the semifinals while going up against the likes of the JabbaWockeeZ and Status Quo.  The [...] Continue »

Meet Ryan Suda, The Man Behind Blacklava

Three years ago, 8Asians contributor Akrypti pretty much laid out the foundation & history of Blacklava and offered her rather “colorful” opinions about the Asian American clothing company. As a good friend and collaborator with Ryan Suda, I felt that it was necessary to do a piece on him from my own perspective in order to get the full effect of what Blacklava was really about.  Several of you may view him as the guy [...] Continue »
