Corporal Punishment and Racial Identity

Corporal Punishment and Racial Identity

Recently, someone put out a request on Twitter for Asian views on spanking after reading a blog post on Racialicious.com on the same subject, but from the African American point of view. Our humble editor, Ernie passed it on to our internal mailing list, and the response was immediate.

Ask an Asian: What’s Asian Identity in Other Parts of the World Like?

Ask an Asian: What’s Asian Identity in Other Parts of the World Like?

Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. In this case, this isn’t so much a question about what to wear at a Chinese New Year dinner or what to tell Asians to bring to a chili kick-off, but about Asian identity living in countries outside North America, courtesy of Jason: 8asians primarily deals with Asian Americans, [Asian Canadians] and “Asian ethnicities,” and we often define our experiences within these cultures. Ask An Asian: How Do You Eat Sushi While Sympathizing With Japan?

Ask An Asian: How Do You Eat Sushi While Sympathizing With Japan?

Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. Sometimes we don’t but that doesn’t stop us from dispensing advice when and where it’s not requested. We’re pushy like that. We recently came across this Dear Prudence article that offered advice on how to properly show sympathy towards Japan’s recent disasters while eating sushi. Yeah. Here’s what we would respond with (if Prudence ever asks). Dear Prudence, I was having lunch today [...] Continue »

Ask an Asian: Are the Majority of Young Japanese Americans Part White?

Ask an Asian: Are the Majority of Young Japanese Americans Part White?

Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. Here is one such e-mail received last week: I found this quote on Andrew Sullivan’s blog: “a large majority of Japanese-Americans born in the 1980s and 1990s have one non-Japanese parent, usually of European origin.” Any idea if this is true? The simple answer is yes. But let’s examine the data, after the jump.

Ask an Asian: Is there an Asian Equivalent to Chili?

Ask an Asian: Is there an Asian Equivalent to Chili?

Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. Here is one such e-mail received last week asked for the Asian equivalent of a chili cook-off: Hi. I am on the social committee for our local swim team. We have a large Asian population (Chinese and Vietnamese) that we would like to feel included in family events. One of our largest fundraisers is a Chili Cook-off. We have a great turnout from [...] Continue »

Symbols of the Asian-American Dream

Symbols of the Asian-American Dream

Asians who come to the U.S. as children of less affluent parents tend to view some objects or things as a represention of having attained the American dream. A Southeast Indian friend of mine, eYeks, reminded me of this in a recent blog article of his, where he talks about when he was younger in India, and just having a phone line was a representation of attaining wealth and affluency. He does go on to [...] Continue »

visualizAsian.com

Norm Mineta

There’s a new website for Asians called visualizAsian.com started by Erin Yoshimura and Gil Asakawa. visualizAsian’s goal is simple: To provide inspiration and empowerment to AAPIs by showcasing AAPI role models, leaders, movers & shakers from the media, politics, sports, filmmaking, activists, CEO’s, TV/movies, personal growth, authors and more, through interviews and feature stories. We want to make the accomplishments of Asian Americans visible, because so often, we’re invisible. They are starting out their website [...] Continue »

Ask an Asian: A Korean Grandmothers’s Unauthorized Visits

(Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. Here is someone — let’s call her “M” — asking for advice on how to deal with her intruding grandmother-in-law.) Could you and your fellow 8Asians contributors help me out? I have a question about Korean culture. First, a little background… I am Canadian-born-and-raised Chinese, married to a Canadian-born-and-raised Korean. Last Thursday, I was home alone with our two kids, eating lunch downstairs [...] Continue »

Ask an Asian: What do you bring to an Americanized Chinese New Years Party?

(Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. This is NOT one of those e-mails, but my co-worker did ask me this question, to which I promptly told her to send this to the blog for additional blog fodder. What? I’m shameless.) To my wise Asian friend Ernie, Help! I’ve been dating a guy I really like for about a month. He asked me if I wanted to go to his [...] Continue »

Ask an Asian: I’m Carrying My Asian Boyfriend’s Baby

(Every so often, we here at 8Asians get e-mails asking for advice. Here is one such e-mail from a white girl with an Asian boyfriend — let’s call her “H” — asking for advice on how to deal with her boyfriend’s mom now that she’s pregnant with his child.) I have had the incredible good sense to get knocked up with [my Asian boyfriend's mothers] grandson, due in January. I live with the baby’s father [...] Continue »

“What [Asian Media] … Would Be Appropriate for a 7-year old Girl?”

Every so often we get e-mails. Here’s one from Julie, and while I don’t necessarily have a wealth of information on appropriate inspirational materials, maybe some 8Asian readers can help out: Can you recommend any books, magazines, or websites spotlighting a variety of Asian women that would be appropriate — and interesting, hopefully — for a seven year-old girl? I’m surprised that I haven’t been able to find better resources on this. My daughter is [...] Continue »
