Is Filipino Cuisine Poised To Make It Into The American Mainstream?

Is Filipino Cuisine Poised To Make It Into The American Mainstream?

Whenever I see an article like this titled “Filipino Cuisine Poised to Break through Gastro Ceiling,” I think “yet again?”  Over twenty years, I ate at Cafe Glenda on Solano Avenue in Berkeley and thought, “Has Filipino food finally made it?”   Efren wrote about Filipino Food becoming the In Thing four years ago.  A few years later came a discussion on how and why Filipino food was unassimilated.  So what’s new and different this time?

Another Side Effect of the Year of the Dragon: Increased Tourism in the U.S.

Tim wrote about the side effects of the Year of the Dragon and here is another one: increased tourism to the U.S. While Chinese traditionally go home for the Lunar New Year, a growing number are going abroad, with top destinations being Europe, the U.S., and Australia. China’s National Tourism Bureau is expecting the number of Chinese traveling abroad for the holidays to be 60% higher than the previous year. Chinese students are said to [...] Continue »

Bonnie Tsui & “The Changing Face of America’s Chinatowns”

Bonnie Tsui & “The Changing Face of America’s Chinatowns”

Bonnie Tsui’s book The Changing Face of America’s Chinatowns is an analysis of the dynamics of Chinatown’s shifting population of immigrants of various Asian heritage origins, including the ones who are economically enticed to go back to their heritage countries. This book was covered on NPR. In the audio of Chinatown recorded in the NPR covereage, I even heard some Taiwanese/Fujianese spoken, and the book’s topic of study made me reflect on the role of [...] Continue »

A Response Piece to This American Life’s Monologue on Chinese Factory Life

A Response Piece to This American Life’s Monologue on Chinese Factory Life

Listening to “Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory” on NPR’s This American Life left my thoughts in a maelstrom. I was excited because I knew what he was talking about and I agreed. I was flustered because I wanted to say he had no idea what he was talking about and I disagreed. Daisey’s monologue initially inspired me to launch into one of my signature 8A tirades, but then I decided not to. Instead of ranting, which would [...] Continue »

NPR’s This American Life’s Episode on Life at an iPhone Factory

From NPR’s This American Life: “Mike Daisey was a self-described ‘worshipper in the cult of Mac.’ Then he saw some photos from a new iPhone, taken by workers at the factory where it was made. Mike wondered: Who makes all my crap? He traveled to China to find out.” This radio segment has two parts: one from Mike Daisey himself, the other from journalists who “did weeks of fact checking to corroborate Daisey’s findings.”

Taiwanese Company EVA Airlines Brings Back Hello Kitty Jets

So maybe you already have your collection of Hello Kitty dolls, note paper, mugs, plates and sandwich maker, but have you been on a Hello Kitty jet? Perhaps some of you got a chance to ride on one of these crazy cute, only minorly over-the-top the first time EVA Air, a Taiwan based airline company, teamed up with Sanrio to create one of these Hello Kitty planes back in 2005, with a second following in 2006. Both [...] Continue »

CEO Clara Shih of Hearsay Social Named to Starbucks Board of Directors

CEO Clara Shih of Hearsay Social Named to Starbucks Board of Directors

A few weeks ago, CEO & Co-Founder of San Francisco-based Hearsay Social Labs (a social media enterprise company) Clara Shih was named as a director for Starbucks. Quite an accomplishment for anyone, but especially at the ripe old age of 29! Considering how few Asian Americans there are at the CEO, upper management or board of directors level, I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Shih’s news. And women are notoriously poorly represented in Silicon [...] Continue »

Kickstarter’s Co-Founder & CEO Perry Chen On NBC Rock Center

Kickstarter’s Co-Founder & CEO Perry Chen On NBC Rock Center

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy I had heard of the crowd funding site Kickstarter before, initially from a TechCrunch article on raising money for a project to make an iPod Nano wrist watch band called the TikTok. But I didn’t know much about the company itself and caught this NBC Rock Center segment on the company. After a backgrounder on Kickstarter,  co-founders Yancey Strickler and Perry Chen are [...] Continue »

Georgia Factory Exporting Chopsticks by the Millions

Apparently this has been a thing for awhile, but it’s back in the news with the story of Jae Lee, a U.S. citizen originally from South Korea who owns Georgia Chopsticks, a factory that creates four million sets of chopsticks each week and exports them all to China. Part of the success is the abundant resources present in Georgia that China and Japan are currently lacking. And importantly for the U.S. economy, the article notes [...] Continue »

Children of Immigrants More Likely To Pursue Advanced Studies

Children of Immigrants More Likely To Pursue Advanced Studies

The Immigrant Learning Center (ILC) has released a report examining the issues related to children of immigrants growing up in immigrant entrepreneurial families. The study focused on the children of U.S. immigrant entrepreneurs, specifically Asian American and Latino graduate and professional students. Study participants grew up in households in the U.S. The main common shared experience among the study participants was their immigrant entrepreneur parents and their experiences growing up around the family business. Both [...] Continue »

The College Admissions Game, Part 5: The Admissions Consultant

Are there Consultants for High School Admissions? Yes there are, and here is a list of some of them. Some consultants, like Michele Hernandez, work with both college and high school admissions. Some of the possible use cases that are cited for using them, such as finding a high school for special needs kids or at risk kids, seem pretty reasonable. I know some parents who had to look around a lot for a high school that would accommodate their child’s learning disability. In other cases, it does seem like a service designed for Tiger parents. I did ask our consultant about whether Number One Son should pick a not so good high school where he would rank highly over a good high school where he wouldn’t rank so well in order to increase the chances to get into a good high school. They recommended choosing the better school. Picking the not so good school might help with getting into college but they might not learn the skills and knowledge to do well in college. Going to school to learn – imagine that!

When you hear news about “College Admissions Consultants,” it’s often sensationalized and over the top. Take this article about a consultant who will guarantee a kid’s college acceptance or your money back or this article about Michele Hernandez, who is said to charge as much as $40,000. We did hire a “college planning consultant,” but not for an insanely large amount like $40,000 and not for the reason you might expect that an Asian American [...] Continue »

APA Employees View Their Companies Less Favorably, the Longer They’ve Been in the U.S.

Via PR Newswire: “The longer Asian Pacific American (APA) employees live in the United States, the less favorably they view their companies, an annual Asia Society survey found.  The 2011 Asian Pacific Americans Corporate Survey indicates that this decline starts after about 10 years and is most apparent amongst APA employees who have lived in the US 20+ years or who are US-born….With the APA population growing faster than any other ethnic group, except for Hispanics, the disengagement [...] Continue »
