China Will Never Become a World Power Until It Learns to Respect Intellectual Property

China Will Never Become a World Power Until It Learns to Respect Intellectual Property

A Chinese businessman tells me offhandedly that he’s under federal investigation. He doesn’t know enough to explain that he’s being investigated for massive amounts of trademark infringement. Those words aren’t in his vocabulary. IP isn’t part of his knowledge set. Instead he says, “You ever heard of Chanel? My factory in China makes Chanel bags. I ship them here and sell in America, in Chinatown. Oh, but my bags are much cheaper than what Chanel sells [...] Continue »

Anya Ayoung-Chee Is Second Asian Woman To Win Project Runway

Anya Ayoung-Chee Is Second Asian Woman To Win Project Runway

What girl doesn’t want beauty and a good sense of fashion? Anya Ayoung-Chee apparently has both. She is the winner of Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2008 and the newest winner of Project Runway. This makes her the second winner of Asian descent for fashion design competition, first being Chloe Dao back in Season 2. Ayoung-Chee said that these past two years have been a bumpy ride, with her brother’s death and her sex tape [...] Continue »

Asian American Commercial Watch: Harajuku Mini for Target

Asian American Commercial Watch: Harajuku Mini for Target

American singer-songwriter and fashion designer Gwen Stefani is apparently launching a clothing line for kids called Harajuku Mini for Target, launching November 13th. I don’t know about you, but the kid below looks a bit too young to be dressing and posing as a hipster. But I’ll have to take a look for myself and see if there is anything cute for my 10-month-old niece to wear!

The 8 Most Offensive Asian Halloween Costumes

The 8 Most Offensive Asian Halloween Costumes

Halloween is coming up and while most of us use this holiday as an opportunity to dress like sluts, a select number of people like to use it to dress up in the most offensive outfits. No, I’m not talking about Nazi uniforms or aborted baby costumes (though I would like to see a aborted Nazi baby one day). I’m talking about those horrific “Asian” inspired Halloween costumes that make your blood boil and your [...] Continue »

8Questions with Brian & Tim Watters of Teruo Artistry

8Questions with Brian & Tim Watters of Teruo Artistry

If you’ve ever seen me in person, then you know that when I’m not dressed up for work I’m wearing Teruo Artistry clothes. I like it because it’s simple but hip, something I can wear to make me look a little less weird and awkward. I decided to interview brothers Brian and Tim Watters, the founders of the Teruo Artistry, who happen to be hapa (and my best friends). From their website, Teruo Artistry (pronounced [...] Continue »

Club KT Shibuya Store Opens As DJ Hello Kitty Spins To Japanese Teenagers

Club KT Shibuya Store Opens As DJ Hello Kitty Spins To Japanese Teenagers

In Japan, Sanrio opened Club KT Shibuya, a new store for Hello Kitty merchandise. But this isn’t your typical Sanrio shop. “Teenagers want to experience club culture for themselves, but they are not allowed to go into places where alcohol is served. Here they can experience club culture,” Tohmatsu [spokesman for Sanrio] told AFP. It’s a neat idea because it’s basically the club culture inside a retail place which allows the younger generation to experience [...] Continue »

Crystal Renn Defends Chinky Eye Taping From Vogue Nippon Shoot

Jezebel scored an interview with model Crystal Renn, who was seen taping her eyes back in a photo shoot for Vogue Nippon. Renn states that she wasn’t trying to look “Asian” but often taped her eyes back to transform her face: “No-one told me at the shoot to tape. It is something that I often do to add to the look of the character if I feel that the look makes sense, and often I [...] Continue »

Chinky Eyes Is The New Fashion Statement!

Chinky Eyes Is The New Fashion Statement!

According to this photo shoot for Vogue Nippon, taping your eyes back is the new black. And no, this isn’t about taping your eyes for double eyelids. This is about taping your eyes UP and BACK away from your face, so you can create the perfect stereotypical Asian face. Supermodel Crystal Renn dons this new look for her spread in this behind the scenes video, where she playfully (and painfully) poses with her new chinky [...] Continue »

DUDE WTF ASIA: Japanese’s Calorie Burning Underwear

Before you watch this commercial for Japan’s “Calorie Shaper” underwear, make sure that you have two minutes of your life to wonder what the hell you just watched. And you might want to get the wastebasket ready when the 70′s era music hits your eardrums. The idea of “functional underwear” is actually pretty interesting, albeit something that I would probably never spend on forty dollars on (2,940 yen is about $38USD). Basically, the Calorie Shapers [...] Continue »

Pianist Yuja Wang Dons Clubwear at the Hollywood Bowl

Pianist Yuja Wang Dons Clubwear at the Hollywood Bowl

By Idy Yuja Wang is a 24-year-old Chinese soloist, who performed this month at the Hollywood Bowl. Her attire got heads turning when she stepped on stage with a sparkly, form-fitting, orange mini-dress and 4-in. gold stilettos. It was so revealing that when she bowed to thank her audience after the performance, she did not know whether to cover her cleavage or her booty! There were some negative critiques about Wang’s outfit. Klickstein, a music [...] Continue »
