Daily Candy DC Mixes Up Chinese & Japanese: Makes No “Sensei”

Daily Candy DC Mixes Up Chinese & Japanese: Makes No “Sensei”

If you live in a big city, you may have subscribed to Daily Candy for their dispatches regarding things to do, places to shop, and where to eat. In the latest “Weekend Guide” from Washington, D.C., Daily Candy recommends the Terra Cotta Warriors Film Festival this weekend at the National Geographic Society. They say that you can watch “Kung fu classics like Lao Tou Ho introduced by martial arts guru Craig D. Reid.” Cool! But [...] Continue »

Figure Skating in the Vancouver Olympics: Yu-na Kim

Figure skating is my favorite Winter Olympic sport. Sadly, the figure skating world in the U.S. lately doesn’t have the Kristi Yamaguchis and Nancy Kerrigans I’ve loved in the past. But I will be watching this year’s women’s competition closely to support Kim Yu-Na who has become a star in Korea and in figure skating–the first star female figure skater in South Korea ever. With a whole nation’s hopes and expectations on those slim shoulders, [...] Continue »

Asians Offended by Atlanta’s New “Yellow Line”

Asians Offended by Atlanta’s New “Yellow Line”

Asians are offended by a recent decision by MARTA — Atlanta’s rail system — to name its line from Atlanta’s Airport to Doraville “the Yellow Line.” And by “Asians are offended,” I mean, “some Asians are offended, and the rest are looking for people to be offended so we can blog about how offended they are.” A quick trip to Wikipedia reveals that MARTA had lines called the Northeast-South Line, the North-South Line, the Proctor [...] Continue »

The Saint’s Scott Fujita: Probably More Japanese Than You

I’m hardly a football fan by any means, but because I have a lot of blogger friends who live in New Orleans, I’ve become a temporary fan of the Saints. (Never been to the Superbowl! Obligatory story of the Superdome going from sub-par Katrina shelter to a place of celebration!) And because I’m a liberal, tree hugging blogger from hippie California, I’ve been sent links to Linebacker Scott Fujita speaking out on abortion and gay [...] Continue »

Hiroyuki Sanada: New Asian Guy on Lost!

Hiroyuki Sanada: New Asian Guy on Lost!

If you’re like me, then you’re probably sitting at your desk at work, surrounded by fanatical coworkers discussing last night’s premiere of Lost. Yes, it’s the start of the final season and yes, more questions have been asked than answered in last night’s episode, but can we please talk about the most important thing revealed? THERE’S A NEW ASIAN GUY! And he seems really important! One of the reasons why I enjoy this show (which [...] Continue »

Reckless Tortuga on Asian Tattoos and Clothing

By Kristian “If you’re not Asian, stay away from Asian characters! Shay Shay.” You’ve seen them on the street and maybe you’re dating them.  Non Asians wearing clothing or tattoos of Chinese & Japanese characters is nothing new.  However, it is pretty hilarious finding out that a lot of these people don’t even know that a lot of these characters are not translated properly. This is currently a problem for people interested in getting Baybayin tattoos, [...] Continue »

Asian American Commercial Watch: Radio Shack

Radio Shack just launched this inexplicable commercial titled “Sensei” promoting the fact that they carry cell phones from three different wireless carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. All the elements of an annoying commercial for Asian Americans – a stereotypical screaming kung fu master. I’m trying to figure out which commercial is more annoying – this one or this Six Flags commercial… Actually, no, I think this KFC commercial annoys me the most. At least when [...] Continue »

Extraordinary Measures: Another Case of Yellowface in Hollywood

Extraordinary Measures: Another Case of Yellowface in Hollywood

When I first saw the movie poster for Extraordinary Measures, starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford, I had no idea what it was about. I guessed Harrison Ford played some kind of heroic character, but beyond that, I had no idea. Nor did I really care — the movie poster looked “eh.” Then I read this article on racebending.com and found out that Harrison Ford’s character, a doctor who finds a cure for Pompe disease, is [...] Continue »

Vote for 8Asians in the 2010 Bloggies; Nominated for “Best Group Weblog”

The Bloggies are the web’s longest-running non-profit, reader voted weblog awards. It’s like the Oscars for bloggers, but with no golden statue at the end. And like the Oscars, it’s an honor just to be nominated! For the second year in a row, 8Asians is one of the five finalists for Best Group Blog in the 10th Annual Weblog Awards (aka the 2010 Bloggies)! It’s pretty cool to be listed alongside The Huffington Post, Lifehacker, [...] Continue »

8Asians’ Joz on the Cover of TIME!

8Asians’ Joz on the Cover of TIME!

Okay, so maybe that’s only partially true. Remember Joz’s hilarious discovery that the blink detection feature discriminated against her and her brother’s Asian eyes? The photo and accompanying story made its way around the Internet, but today, Time featured Joz in their article about racism in face detection technology. I managed to snag an impromptu interview with Joz about her newfound fame and the fate of the camera before she hopped on a plane to [...] Continue »

The Best Chinese Restaurants in the U.S.

The awards for the best Chinese Restaurants in the U.S. were handed out earlier in January at the sixth annual awards ceremony in Las Vegas for the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants. I was surprised to hear about this, as I hadn’t heard of these awards before, and the organization handing out these awards are already in their sixth year. A local SF Bay Area restaurant, Chef Chu’s of Los Altos, CA placed in the top [...] Continue »
