It might be just me, but I assumed that everyone had the same earwax. But while researching my last article (Do Asians Smell?) I found out that (most) Asians have completely different earwax than those of other races. I even told my wife this fact and it blew her mind. Okay, she didn’t really care, but she did express mild surprise which is more than I can say for most of my articles so you’ll forgive […] Continue »
A new AARP study tells us what all of us Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) already know. AAPIs are more likely than any other racial group to care for their elders. “Caregiving Among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders” is the title of the first of three reports by AARP about issues affecting AAPIs age 50 and older. The study found that 73 percent of AAPIs age 45-55 are expecting to care for their aging […] Continue »
Dear 8Asians readers, After a long long long hiatus, I’m back! And asking the hard hitting questions I’ve come to be known for. Please send me questions that you want answered! Today’s topic is—drum roll please—“Do Asians Smell?” (This should not be mistaken for my article, “Do Asians have the worst smelling farts?”) Before I begin, let me be clear: I don’t smell. Never have. At least, I don’ t think so. Any ex-girlfriends out […] Continue »
I saw this video posted earlier this month on Facebook by someone by budding self-described actress, director, writer Anna Akana and recently saw that The Huffington Post had picked it up. Although I’m a guy, I liked the message that Akana is delivering – that beauty is both outside *and* inside. The YouTube video has over 1.4 million views now! If you’re starting off in Hollywood (or entertainment in general), it definitely makes sense to […] Continue »
A few months ago, a student from Yale University, Frances Chan, blogged in the Huffington Post about her horrific experience with Yale–she was 5’ 2” and about 90 lbs, and they designated her an “eating disorder” case and began to force her to gain weight. The problem was, Chan didn’t have an eating disorder, her body was just the way it was, but their use of the broad (and widely considered inaccurate) BMI measurements labeled […] Continue »
When I was in college, I stumbled across the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, by Bill Watterson. In particular I was quite taken with the strip where Calvin and his toy tiger Hobbes discuss where babies come from. By the end of the strip Hobbes looks at Calvin’s shirt tag and says “You came from Taiwan”. I guess I really liked it since I really did come from Taiwan, and I came into the world […] Continue »
I hate to share videos that objectify women mainly because it makes me want to throw up. Just watching that video I found above has left me with no appetite for the rest of my breakfast. Nevertheless, I thought the concept I want to explore was important enough, and really, there are so many contrasts in that video that when I watch it I swing dramatically back and forth from completely inspired to thoroughly disgusted. […] Continue »
As you may or may not know, Lupita Nyong’o recently won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Patsey in ’12 Years a Slave.’ While millions have watched Nyong’o’s acceptance speech at the Oscars, but many will not have seen her speech prior to the Oscars at the Essence Magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. Her words touched me: “I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not […] Continue »
I was catching up on watching The Daily Show, when I saw this Dr. Pepper commercial and noticed that the woman was beauty tip and YouTube sensation Michelle Phan. I first noticed that she was a cute Asian woman before realizing who the woman was. Upon closer look, her face reminds me of a younger Asian version of Jessica Alba, at least in this commercial. Very cool that Phan has a Diet Dr. Pepper commercial!
The incident where Maria Kang was briefly kicked off of Facebook, recent news about the “lower” rate of obesity among Asian Americans, and the debate on CNN above combine to bring up a subject that isn’t often discussed: health vs appearance. Is someone who is skinny necessarily fit? Is someone who is not so lean necessarily unfit? While I don’t doubt that Maria Kang is very fit, Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) appearances can be […] Continue »
For the past few months, I’ve been on a 1200 calorie baseline diet, which means I try to keep my daily calorie net intake at 1200, just enough to keep myself alive while maintaining a 500 calorie deficit. On days I don’t work out, I don’t eat more than 1200, but on days I do work out, I can eat more. So I’ve been calorie counting with My Fitness Pal, and what’s cool about the […] Continue »
RoseHeart: I love the fact that most Asian men are hairless or have very little hair. I find it extremely attractive. I prefer an Asian man... – Do Asians Have Body Hair?
Ok: It's really simple: It's an easy/cheap hairstyle for medium length straight hair. Any cultural BS beyond that comes after that fact. I'm white/scandinavian, and have... – Why Do So Many Asians Have Bowl Hair Cuts?
