Asian Men Have The Highest Salary

By Tim | Sunday, August 1, 2010 | 38 Comments

professional asian man 293nmgetty images Asian Men Have The Highest SalaryIf you were looking for another reason to date an Asian male, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics just came up with one. In their latest report on earnings in the 2nd quarter of 2010, Asian men topped the charts again, making $901 in median weekly earnings. Asian women were second at $854, followed by white men at $838. When broken down by educational attainment, those with an advanced degree (past bachelors) had the highest salaries. And the professions that made the most were managerial/professional/financial based positions.

As Andy Wergedal summed up the report:

So at present here in the United States, the well-educated Asian male seems to be at the top of the economic totem pole, while the least-educated Latina female seems to be at the bottom. Remember, these are median incomes, however. Asians represent the smallest segment of the American population of the races mentioned, at 4.4 percent. African Americans make up 12.4 percent of the population and Latinos represent 15.4 percent. Whites represent the largest segment of the American population, at 65.4 percent.

These latest statistics just prove that those who studied and did well in school got to have the last laugh, by making the most money. In the end, I hope being successful, makes up for all the teasing, taunting and bullying the educated Asian male had to put up with during the childhood and teen years. And maybe this will help put a little more desirability for Asian males in the dating pool. (Back when I was in the dating pool every little bit would have helped!)

Hmmm I’ll be waiving this in my next date face when he makes a fuss about getting an appetizer.

  • johnklin

Maybe more gold diggers will be attracted to Asian men? LOL.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Larry-Shinagawa/509504972 Larry Shinagawa

While this statistic is accurate, it also obscures the fact that the returns on investment are much lower for Asian American men. They still lag in their income returns for their years of education and work experience. This is even more made even worse by the fact that most Asian Americans go to qualitative higher ranked schools than most White men. Please look forward to our reports that will be issued next year!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Larry-Shinagawa/509504972 Larry Shinagawa

These aggregate reports that are presented are very misleading. Region, ethnicity, generation, and fields all make a difference. Asian American men of Northeast Asian and South Asian background are indeed making high incomes, but this is not true for many Southeast Asian American and Pacific Islander American men. Also, generationally, it is the 1.5 generation that is making the very high incomes. Subsequent generations make considerably less, and recently arrived also make less perhaps because of language barriers and citizenship status.

Also, there are many differences between ethnic groups.

I don’t wanna sound like a dick or anything, but I think it’s sad that Asian guys try to seek validation by “bragging” about making the highest salaries or going to the best universities.

Are Asian guys really this insecure about themselves that they think that by flashing their bling bling, they will become the object of desire for white women?

Pathetic. But whatever. This post only proves Asian guys are just as petty and superficial as everybody else. But whatever, we Asian men make the most money and are the highest educated, so morals be damned.

  • timat8asians

What I find really amusing is that Andy Wergedal isn’t Asian. He’s the one that promoted the finding from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and how I picked up on it to write the article here. Oh and btw, I have absolutely zero desire to have a white woman, so validation sure, but white women, absolutely not.

  • aEnigma7345

Again, not to be a dick or anything, but yes, I know that Andy Wergedal isn’t Asian. The name doesn’t sound Asian.

On one hand, we are trying to distance ourselves from the model minority stereotype for a good number of reasons, not the least of which is that it has contributed to a rise in depression and mental health issues amongst Asian American youth b/c they feel pressured to live up to the stereotype and failing to do so only makes them feel worthless.

On the other hand, I feel this article is only trying to reinforce Asians as the model minority. Asians hate being seen as meek and nerdy, yet we love to boast about how much money we make and how we all attend elite universities and work in high paying, intellectually demanding white collar professions.

I don’t know what your intent was in posting this article, but I feel like perhaps — and maybe this is only subconsciously — you are trying to elevate the status of Asian men’s desirability and feel that Asian guys making high income is the only way to boast that image.

I feel that you may very well be doing the opposite effect. What if an Asian guy doesn’t make a lot of money? Does that mean he’s worthless? That he has less value than an Asian guy who went to Harvard/Stanford and is making six figures on Wall Street?

Asian guys should not be measured by their money or what school they attended.

  • http://www.blasianbytch.com BlasianBytch

Does validation = a white woman?

  • timat8asians

As for having a point, I don’t think there’s a point to most of the articles posted on 8Asians, other than to give out a little bit of information, on something that happened to appear in the recent news, that might be of interest to the Asian community.

Beyond that if it happens to elevate Asian men’s desirability, that would be a plus, but not one that I think would actually happen, as I think there’s plenty of other mainstream media doing the exact opposite.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the higher income has not help us gain much social status yet, especially in the dating scene. If this can change in a “big” way, I highly doubt if higher income will be a significant factor.

  • http://hellomoye.com/ moye

Wow. Whatever happened to the idea that money doesn’t buy you happiness? Tim, I can’t tell if you’re being serious or tongue-in-cheek.

  • timat8asians

    Moye-
In regards to dating Asian men because they make more money, I was being completely tongue-in-cheek. I couldn’t think of any other way to present this information seriously, so I figured go for the funny angle.

  • http://hellomoye.com/ moye

Phew. You had me worried there for a minute.

  • timat8asians

Remember, never take yourself (or any of the 8Asians writers) too seriously. :)

  • philhead

if one were good at it, tongue-in-cheek could even be humorous

  • timat8asians

Well if I didn’t get humorous, at least I got controversial :P

You are right, I am not asian. My interest in the article was due to the difference in salary and income. My sites are dedicated to helping people get jobs. Some of the articles get reposted to 40×50.com

make lots of money in exchange for having no media credibility. whats new

  • lika2

As an Asian woman who comes from a family with remarkably attractive men and who went to a church with lots of funny, sociable, friendly Asian guys who had NO TROUBLE getting dates and girlfriends and none of that had ANYTHING to do with how much they make, I find this article highly offensive and racist. It makes Asian guys look undesirable, which is a stereotype that I’ve heard too many times growing up and annoys me to no end because that’s half the population of my race that’s being insulted. And it’s totally false. Asians guys are like any other guys, in that their chances in the dating scene depends on the individuals, their attractiveness and personality. Money has little to do wtih it. It makes it seem like women only want white guys, which is false and racist , or guys who makes a lot of money, which is false and sexist.

  • lika2

I will agree with you in another comment that the protrayal of Asian men in media is a huge problem *sigh* Media seems to love making out Asian women to be lovesick about any man who’s not Asian (we make such great objects of “yellow fever”) and make Asian man either invisible, undesirable, backwards, or some other infuriating stereotype. I don’t think trying to tell people that money is the best thing about dating an Asian man is helpful, but I do understand your frustration with the media’s protrayal of the nerdy little Asian dude who never gets a girl.

Can’t believe so many thumb downs.

The Asian men are the most oppressive race in America — more oppressive than Blacks.

White men have been stereotyping us as kung fu nerds, but we still fight it.

White men have been stealing our Asian women, promoting White Men/Asian Women race pairing, but we Asians still fight it.

Now, White men want us to feel ashamed of everything in our culture, but we still fight it.

I am replying to your comment because it was the last comment that substantively addresses the original subject (plus I don’t want my comment to be at the bottom where it won’t be read : ). I don’t see (very often) this negative portrayal of Asian men in the media. Perhaps I don’t watch enough television. I am a white male and I do love Asian women (as every other race seems to), and Latinas, and even some white and black women (basically women of every race, I don’t discriminate). From what I have seen, many women (of all races) actually like Asian men
(irrespective to their income, though income certainly helps). I have had a few friends and associates who were Asian (men) and they never had trouble dating/getting dates with women of their own race or other races. I agree with you 100% when you said, “Asians guys are like any other guys, in that their chances in the dating scene depends on the individuals, their attractiveness and personality.” Many, if not most women nowadays are upwardly mobile with advanced degrees, and earning as much or more money than many of their male counterparts. So income is becoming of less importance when it comes to dating. I saw a recent study that said women now comprise over 50% of the university population in the U.S. So it makes sense if a woman of any race is not going to date a guy of any race, if he is unemployed or a 44 year old assistant manager at McDonald’s. No matter your race, financial success makes you a more suitable potential partner. I also find the term “Yellow Fever” offensive; The “Yellow” part being a clear derogatory racial slur of the past. I have heard Asian women say that they find it unattractive when (white) men have “Asian Fever”. To me, that is to deny one’s own sexuality or attractiveness. For men, to ignore their innate attraction to Asian women is to ignore their own sexuality/attraction. I feel that if I have a preference for Asian women, that it’s a natural and normal thing given the percentage of Asian women in the world (including Middle Easterners, Indians, Inuits, and Native Americans of both North and South America). I also feel that racism is ignorance, and that as all races intermix there will be no more racism. Through the process of natural selection there will ultimately be less disease, higher immunity and a stronger and more intelligent human population inheriting the best qualities from each race and culture. Just my opinion.

While Asian Men having a high salary certainly helps, it still puts you at risk for being a gold digger’s prospect not to mention cuddle (excuse my language) bitch. It’s certainly a positive stereotype for Asian men that we’re highly educated and well off, but it still pigeon holes us into a niche area of the dating pool. Maybe boyfriends and potential husbands, but rarely fun buddies and rockstars.

I’m “so called” Black! Asian stereotypes are not as bad as mine. Anybody want to trade places? At least you have a rich and strong culture to base off of. For us, at one time much of the culture was a mystery (Chinese). Bruce Lee opened the door to the race and culture that many of us respected and admired.

Because, not only did we see another culture who was oppressed, but a culture who could and would fight back. I wished Martin Luther King knew Kung Fu. I bet when the cops hosed blacks down, the history books would read different. I have no native name, language, family history. . .My Chinese bro’s can date their family names back to the early dynasties. Who cares what whites and the US think of you, your cultures are self sufficient where most of America depends on Asia. All my Asian Bro’s like White women and have no problem getting dates with them. Mainly because of media, White man/Asian women, so they feel White women are easier to get along with because of it. All of this shows, the westernizing plague of the world is spreading, I guess we were ground 0.

I liked the article despite most of the posters hating it. I think it shows the fruits of our and our parents endeavors, sacrifices and so on. Reading all the sad posts belie what should be a joyous moment for us all. We’ve studied hard, kept our nose to the grindstone and now we are the top earners. What race out there would be opposed to letting this news out about their position in the food chain?

But then maybe we are a bit too humble, too quiet, too embarrassed about this great news which we cannot blame or credit anyone but ourselves for. So I say let’s grab life by the balls and act like we have a pair!

  • Honest Abe Lives

Asian men earn the most because WE HAVE TO. Our parents pressure us. We can’t get women if we’re not high earners (we have to compensate for the natural hole we’re in right off the bat).So great, but it also sucks too because are forced to due to the circumstances.

  • PhucDat

This whole article was kinda frustrating and ridiculous. “And maybe this will help put a little more desirability for Asian males in the dating pool.” …. what O_O

  • timat8asians

@PhucDat You’ve obviously never heard of the “no asians, no fats, no fems” that’s commonly referenced in the gay community. It’s very frustrating and makes it seem like no on (at least in the gay community) is interested in Asian men.

  • AsiaticGlory

Asians have an inherent predisposition towards mathematical ability. In the modern world, the best way to succeed in life is to be skilled in a technical field. Despite all the economic problems, there are still plenty of jobs for engineers, programmers, analysts, accountants, etc. All of those fields require mathematical ability.

Finally Asian men seriously need to stop obsessing over non-Asian women. We should be marrying Asian women. Remember that it takes an Asian man and an Asian woman to produce Asian children.

Personally I just don’t care about casual dating. I am only interested in long-term relationships.

I honestly don’t know where this guy’s got his information from, but he’s missing out on ALOT of information and details that affect ALOT of different areas. And his blanket statement about success in schooling leading to successful career and lifestyles isn’t a direct correlation to say the least. This article seems to be missing out on alot of nuances that only life can give. I’m an asian guy myself and to be honest, this just seems like a poor excuse and a half hearted stab in the dark.
