Does Your Asian Mom Vote?

I vote. My Mom votes. Do you vote? Does your Mom? As you may know, Asian Americans are one of the least likely to register to vote as well as to actually cast a ballot, going against the grain for being supposedly the most educated as well as having the overall highest income. Well, The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Jutice) is trying to increase voter participation amongst Asian Americans.

APALC launched this past week the “Your Vote Matters! 2012” campaign to empower and mobilize community members to exercise their voice at the ballot box. As a part of that effort, they recently teamed up with The Fung Brothers to produce this humorous video, Does Your Asian Mom Vote?!

I thought the video was quite funny, playing to some stereotypes no doubt – but demonstrating the importance of voting. Personally, I thought the old white politician in the video was a subtle reference to Jay Chen’s incumbent (but re-districted) opponent Congressman Ed Royce.

My 88-year-old mom has already voted absentee. I called her when she asked on Facebook what the Green Party was. We had a nice long discussion about her candidates in Texas, and how to properly submit her ballot. She attends political rallies and tries to be well-informed.

I’m an early voting poll worker in Florida, looking forward to the election but not the 14-hour days (in at 6am, out when we finish ballot accounting after the polls close at 7pm). I’m at at the busiest polling location in our county, where we’ve worked hard over the past decade to clean up the process and make certain we provide services to our voters with integrity and efficiency.

After the 2000 election debacle, I decided to become part of the solution. Wish me luck! There are a lot of angry voters this year!
