8$: Strength in NUMBERS: Asian American Urban Music Project

UPDATE: This project successfully raised its funding goal on 11/2/2013

8$ is a series which occasionally highlights interesting crowdfunding projects. Every day, the 8Asians team is inundated by many worthy pitches. We are unable to highlight every one that comes our way, or even the ones we might individually support. The projects selected for 8$ are not endorsements by 8Asians. (To be considered for 8$, we highly suggest you not harass the writers or the editors of 8Asians.)

WHO: CHOPS

WHAT: Kickstarter project: Strength in NUMBERS: Asian American urban music project

WHEN: Deadline to contribute is Saturday Nov 2, 1:15pm PDT.

WHY:

Growing up Asian American, it was hard to identify with pop culture: music, TV, movies. My generation watched The Simpsons and Spongebob just to see some yellow faces. Years ago, me and two good friends broke barriers as the Mountain Brothers, the 1st Asian American rap artists signed to a major label, releasing two albums & getting video play on the big networks before taking separate paths…

… I spent the past TWO YEARS making music with over 30 Asian American artists who I consider among the best out, with special appearances from Japan and Korea. Even the guys from MBs got back together for a couple songs (and a fantastic new video by award-winning director Chris Chan Lee, who co-directed our “Galaxies” vid back in the day)!

Here’s more names than you can fit in your homie’s Honda Civic: Ann One (LA), Baiyu (NYC), Bambu (LA), Catzie of Yellow Rage (PHL), Connie Lim (LA), Decipher (PHL), DJ Bonics (PHL/PGH), DJ Neil Armstrong (NYC), DJ Roli Rho (NYC), Dumbfoundead (LA), El Gambina (NJ), Erika David (Bay Area), Hopie (SF), Hoya (NYC), J-Key (NYC), Joanlee (LBC), Kiwi (LA), Lil Crazed (MN), Matt Cab (Tokyo), Mic Barz (ATL), Mountain Brothers (PHL), Nikko Dator (LV), Paul Kim (LA), Prometheus Brown (SEA), Rekstizzy (NYC), Rocky Rivera (SF), Ruby Ibarra (Bay Area), Tasha aka Yoonmirae (Korea), Thai (PDX), Tiger JK (Korea), Timothy Flu (ATL), Verbal of M-Flo / Teriyaki Boyz (Tokyo), and Yellow Boyz (ATL)
