Womens World Cup Final Lead to Obvious and Stupid Pearl Harbor Jokes on Twitter

By Ernie | Sunday, July 17, 2011 | 23 Comments

Oh, Twitter: come to microblog about the lunch you had today, stay to see the tweets on the Women’s World Cup Final against the United States and Japan happening right now — and roll your eyes at the oh-too-predictable Pearl Harbor jokes. So many, in fact, that “Pearl Harbor” is now a trending topic along with #worldcupfinal.

For what it’s worth, we here at 8Asians think that if you’re going to be offensive and racist and hit below the belt, the least you could do is make a tsunami or nuclear meltdown reference; I mean, at least that shit was more recent, right?

Thanks for rating this! Now tell the world how you feel - Share this on Twitter and on Facebook.
(Nah, it's cool; just take me back.)

Was it hard to root against the United States when Commodore Perry forced gunboat diplomacy against Japan? Then it shouldn’t be so hard to root against them today.

  • Ernie H.

@dequinix I could see this as a comic strip in The New Yorker.

  • JaiQu

As an American who enjoys soccer… I am ashamed that people will bring up such subjects when it has nothing to do with the game. Japan, and Japanese Americans, have proven over and over again that they deserve the respect and admiration of not only America but the world. To bring up what amounts to ancient history in the context that it has been used today on Twitter is shameful and I am sorry to see it.

  • ellebee11

unfortunately, there are many more andrea wallace’s out in the world. so tacky. so so tacky.

  • Kimiye

Worse, “Japs” is trending even higher. Welcome to my childhood.

  • Kimiye

And, amazingly, both trends just disappeared! Is there censorship on Twitter trends? Hmmm.

  • Ernie H.

@Kimiye Twitter trending topics are moderated by community managers that work there, so to answer your question: yes.

Most people posting those negative updates are ignorant males with no idea of what war is. Most of them would never step in the field of war of the brave men and women that served in Japan or the US nor understand their sacrifice. Shows you that a lot of people in the USA have no honor, no self respect, and they would kill their neighbor if they had to. Its embarrassing to be an american when these things come afloat and I hope that the Japanese visitors in this site and across the world can accept my apology in their regards and mine as well.

Congratulations to Japan for the big win today. Omedeto Nippon.

  • raymonst

    aaaaaaaand japan won.

  • ErikaHarada

Sociological Images has a post on this as well…with some disturbing screencaps.

    http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2011/07/18/poor-sports-racism-and-jingoism-among-u-s-soccer-fans/

    I hate people.

  • dequinix

@ErikaHarada Easy to make these comments when you don’t have friends who are Japanese (or even Asian). Especially love the picture of the kid holding up a “Save Darfur” sign wishing Japan to get hit by another tsunami.

  • MayaulKayiim

@dequinix @ErikaHarada If South Darfur had beaten the US, would people be saying “I hope they have another genocide”? Of course not. These days we’re only holding back our racism on those who are helpless and hopelessly screwed.

  • dequinix

@MayaulKayiim @ErikaHarada There are definitely two different aspects of American culture at play here: 1) “Save Darfur” is often a way to ease oneself of liberal guilt by pretending to care about the plight of others halfway around the world. And what better place to “feel sorry” for people than Africa, the continent that’s been ravaged by Western powers over the last five hundred years? 2) Japan, unlike Darfur, has a history of war with America, so they’re easy to take the low road against. Japan is also an economic power, so the “poor people” guilt is absent. The combination of these makes it sad and hilarious at once.

  • StephRWong

I also heard of someone on facebook saying after the semi finals, “All the Japan fans, do the wave!” *cough* okay…cuz everyone’s gonna laugh at that one…

  • raymonst

@dequinix @ErikaHarada i was flabbergasted when i saw that one.

    @Ernie H. @Kimiye Thank goodness for that 🙂

  • MayaulKayiim

@dequinix @ErikaHarada “The combination of these makes it sad and hilarious at once.”

It also shows the hypocrisy of American bandwagon-hopping pseudo-liberals who “like +1” a noble cause in while a student, but don’t actually have any of the empathy needed to continue caring. It obviously doesn’t count if someone has to tell you how to feel empathy.

  • EmilyElaineDzenowski

Wow, some people can be so insensitive. Of all the things to cause people to go this low. It doesn’t say very much about their level of intelligence.

  • Takuma

I have no sympathy or understanding for the American team. They lost, and rightfully so with these comments. I wonder how they feel now lol. Talking crap and losing.

  • dequinix

@Takuma Wait, how does this relate to the American team? Both teams were class acts on the pitch, and I was amazed at the friendliness between the two even in the most heated moments. Let’s not talk demean a fantastic effort by the American team because of some ignorant wankers on Twitter/Facebook.

  • Andrew Hvatum

This shows why multi-culturalism is so difficult. If we were all the same “race” and culture world wide, then these people would just been seen as idiots and people would ignore them, they would be representative of nothing larger but the “idiot group”. Instead, they become examples of all white people and obviously for some of the people reading this, they overshadow all the other efforts of America towards Tsunami relief and Americans favorable opinion of Japan and Japanese people. It’s a shame and makes me very sad, but it’s simply human nature and I don’t see any way around it.

You see the same thing with American or Japanese opinion about Islam. The killing of Hitoshi Igarashi by a Muslim became for many Japanese people the thing they take note of regarding Muslims – if it had just been a deranged Japanese person, it wouldn’t have been of special note or changed anyone’s opinion about a group of people.

  • Andrew Hvatum

Nice, so you respond to a random smattering of comments lifted from Twitter (we don’t even know if these comments were very poor jokes or meant seriously) and then reach the conclusion that Americans, a group of 300 million people, are incapable of empathy. Very classy.
