MSNBC: Asian Americans Could Swing Outcome in Battleground States

By John | Tuesday, June 26, 2012 | 3 Comments

Last week, Pew Research Center released their study of “The Rise of Asian Americans.” MSNBC did a segment on the report and discuss the importance of the Asian vote. Although Asian American make up only 6% of the overall U.S. population, their numbers in a few battleground states  – especially in Nevada and Virgina – could help swing the vote for Obama or Romney. Given that Asian Americans generally lean Democratic, it’s no wonder that Obama has been paying a little bit more attentions to the Asian American community lately. In a future follow-up post, I’ll go into more of the details of the Pew report’s results on Asian Americans and their views on politics.

I really don’t think Romney is going to win in any way, but it’s still cool to see the possibility of Asian Americans having more political participation.

I watch MSNBC and Fox News to get both the liberal and conservative points of view. Although I have to force myself to watch FN since they clearly don’t give a shit about Asians, to the point where it’s still acceptable to use Asian stereotypes for humor. I’ve seen it twice on ‘The Five’ where they made the typical Jeremy Lin/Chinese stereotype jokes during ‘Linsanity’ and some dog-eating comments when talking about the last Paquiao fight. Of course I never see anyone on Fox News using anti-Black or Hispanic stereotypes, even during news stories. They have no qualms using ‘chink’ or other racist words related to Asians (seen it on their regular news blocks and on Shepard Smith) but, of course, will never say ‘nigger’, even when talking about news stories.

In complete contrast, MSNBC seems to be very Asian friendly. Not only have I seen the common courtesy you’d hope to expect from a professional news organization (not using stereotypes to get a laugh, etc) but I’ve seen news stories on Rachel Maddow about Japanese Americans who suffered internment during WW2 and received recognition for fighting for the rights. They have a few Asian reporters and I’ve seen Chris Matthews praise one for doing an excellent job reporting a difficult story. I see Asian men and women being brought in as regular guests on a few of their programs. And of course, they have 2 Asian people hosting their own shows.

TL;DR – MSNBC is very Asian friendly while Fox News not only clearly doesn’t give a shit about Asians but still freely uses Asian stereotypes for laughs.

Oh, and don’t count out Romney just yet. I’m sure there are enough people out there so pissed off at the state of the economy that they’ll blindly vote for anyone but Obama, even if it completely goes against their interests. Don’t get lazy when it comes to voting or think that Obama’s got it in the bag already.

I agree with the disparity in “news” from Fox and others.

MSNBC also features regularly Margaret Cho on the Melissa Harris-Perry show. Nice!
