Some say that 2011 is the year of the Tiger Mom but I’m beginning to believe that this is the year of Asian Americans in libraries. First we had the whole Alexandra Wallace debacle and then the whole Asians Sleeping In The Library tumblr and now this: an Asian American woman at CSUN “freaking out” in the library due to inconsiderate students during finals week.
Also, the definition of “freaking out” has also been changed to mean “whispering loudly and dramatically in a library.” Either it was a slow day for the Internet or the world’s standards for Asian Americans showing any form of emotion are a lot lower than I expected.
Let’s be honest, Internet. I have no idea why this video has gone viral. I have no idea why blogs like Gawker or LA Weekly or even Yahoo! News decided to run with this story. This is a girl freaking out? She’s whispering loudly to people and paces up and down the hallway. After watching too many YouTube videos of people hitting each other at Denny’s or kicking each other in the nuts, this CSUN video is as tame as a puppy attack. She doesn’t throw a punch. She doesn’t cry. She doesn’t even flip a table. Yes, she needs to simmer down but don’t we all, deep down inside?
So I don’t know who to be more disappointed in: the CSUN girl or the Internet. Perhaps both.
To this anonymous Asian American college student, we sympathize. We understand how hard life can be, especially when you’re studying for finals and people are being loud in the library. But in this day and age, when every embarrassing outburst is caught on camera and uploaded to YouTube by the time you return to your dorm room, you need to give it all that you can. Next time you’re upset at someone in the library, up the energy level to 150%. Flip a table. Raise your voice. Throw some books. Maybe tear your shirt off. Just be creative. And when I see you again on another blog, I want to read about the real craziness that’s hiding behind that face. Make us proud.
To the Internet for calling this a “freak out,” try better next time. You bring us nut shots, epic fails, deformed pigs and dancing squid bowls. I know you can do better than this. This CSUN video isn’t worth anything. It’s not even racist. I want my minute and 23 seconds back, please.
